Cadeau, Comment was directed at everyone , not you in perticular. I have stayed away from the questions lately because of all the new posters, some do not want a factual answer. I never sugar coat.

Cadeau,

Usually, at least here, if the bird is over melanized, the ear covert/spot/tuft, whatever

is usually very dark, like black. Is yours black or does it match the color of the hackles? The dark eyes may still yet change if he's only 4 months old, some lines change faster than others, but here, the eyes are usually orange by 5 months or so. The black stripe in the hackle feather on the lower end is normal. Saddle color can come in more later on, and even more so after the juvie molt.

The other roo sounds like he has the two tone type hackle? Copper on top with a band of gold maybe? What color are his legs? What color is his beak? Pics would help, but I know what you mean about the rain!

Seriously, what does the APA call it? We could use a pic or a diagram of the names of the chicken parts for those of us who don't have any such books. Got any pics so that all can see?

Question for everyone. Looking at the hen flock yesterday and was wondering what is the proper shape wanted for the marans female. Does the MCCUSA want a fan, closed, open, tight tail feathering . I know this should be in the Marans approved standard for Marans in general. If anyone has an idea post .

Debbi, the SOP has an entire sections with terms , Called Glossary of technical terms. They just call it ear Tuft. The reason I brought this up the more people see it called ear coverts the more you will see the words Ear Coverts.

What I like/prefer, and again, terms are coming into play here; I like to see an open or semi-fan shape from the side, not pinched, and the triangle when looking from the rear. I also want the tails to be as close to 45* as possible. Some hens I see have way too high a tail set. If they had sickles, they be squirrel tailed. JMHO

That's what I wanted to hear, thanks. So from now on, for me, it's ear tufts. Any way could you scan that page for us, or is it on the APA site?

Debbi, I think someone should explain what is really wanted. Myself in the female would prefer the inverted U instead of the V shape. From the rear I would like the tail to look a little wide and open. We discussed this before but since none of us had any input it was not included in the Marans standard. I do not know what we are supposed to look for in the tail section.

I see very few males with good color that have good type.

Debbi, all APA copyright stuff, sorry

What I have found though is some sketches with the DQs and faults that are in the Morley jull Book, that say they are from the dept. of Agriculture and these would be fair game for anyone. give me a few days and will see what I can do.

LOL!
Lotsapaints did post a photo of one...remember the trailer hitch ball behind the head. But I can't remember exactly who all has posted one, there have been many of them posted over time. I can tell you that one time I hatched out 1 chick like that about 2 years ago (it was a black copper hatched from Jeane eggs that I hatched for my best friend) it was a very dark hen, shows very little copper and she lays a GORGEOUS egg!
