Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Well chicken herding here at Peregrine Hill Farm has gotten easier. Sherman knows his name! He RUNS to me when I call. I haven't coddled him for fear of making him aggressive and he isn't one to be petted and loved on but he knows that Mama calling = food. He and my blue EE hen have taken to chasing the side by side ATV as I go by. It's the food wagon. Even though they have never found food ON the food wagon they know that it is the thing that brings the food. The EEs will even climb on it. The chasing the ATV makes me more than a little nervous. Thankfully Sherman thinks the gravel of the driveway is an impassable ribbon of certain rooster death.

Silly birds!

Sabella ~ I had read that about too much handling as chicks makes for an aggressive roo. Don't know how true it is, or if it just depends on the individuals? Pip, handled a lot = aggressive. Roy & Clyde, handled a lot too = calm and docile. I can pick up Roy or Clyde, anywhere, anytime, any time of day. They both come to their names, as does Pip. I don't do the cuddle thing with any of them, just when it's necessary to pick up and carry. It's a job to catch Pip, but when he is caught he calms down. Wouldn't hold him at eye level, but he doesn't fight me...yet. Don't care to pick him up though, he had his days of that, now it's like trying to hold a buzz saw!

It is probably the individual personality of the roo. I've had it go both ways too. The blue roo I recently lost would jump up on my lap whenever I sat down in the yard. He would fly up on the pickup bed tail gate if I was standing by it and come up to me and want his neck scratched. Once I would scratch his neck and hold him he would go to sleep lol. He was never aggressive toward me. He was about a year old. I have another blue roo who is the opposite. Tolerates people to feed and water him but will challege if given half a chance and hates to be picked up and will bite.

I finally got a few pics today. Had to move several coops into the woods lately because of the heat. The birds seem MUCH happier, and more bugs! I just have to work my way through lots of spider webs in the morning- yuck!

berkeleyspringsbecareful with the bright colors , if i were my blaze orange out in my coop i get attacked by my nasty silkie roo but happy to say i never had a bad or mean wheaten and thats a good thing because they are big compared to silkiee

I've never had a mean wheaten either. Right now I have 3 wheaten roos and they are all big ol sweeties and they are pretty big. The smallest one has a shoe thing. He hates new shoes entering his pen. He hates bright shoes entering his pen. He will attack all unknown and or bright shoes. I wear sandals all the time and he will attack new sandals and is very careful about never getting my toes. I have seen him eyeballing my blue toenail polish but he never has attacked yet lol.

I have one silkie splash roo who thinks he is Godzilla. He is the tiniest little thing and all poofy like a hen and he struts around and tries to attack my hand sometimes. It's almost funny unless he gets me, he does bite hard but at least with the little ones you can just grab them up and cuddle them and they usually calm right down.

I know a guy on another forum who swears his roos will attack him if he wears red. Hmmmm someone should do an experiment lol.
