Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I think your first blue rooster is a blue copper and not a pure blue. If he is leaking copper then it is likely he has a blue or black copper in his genetics. Sometimes the blue birds (not just the Marans but any breed) can get some gold tones from running around in the sun freeranging during the summer but his does look like true copper. The middle toe feathers should not be present. Leg feathering is dominant so harder to get rid of than some things.
I have had some limited success in breeding to a clean legged marans to loose the middle feathering. Some of the babies will have it and some won't but it can show up in the next generation from the clean middle toe feathered one soooo...
I have some good dark laying blue coppers that I have been working with that, a few had feathers on thier middle toe, kinda a pain.

Your darker blue boy looks really nice. His tail may turn out to be a little high when it fills out. Thier tail angle is supposed to be around 45 degrees. If his tail turns out to be high, you could mate him to a female with a low tail to help improve this. If he is brothers with the other blue/copper boy you may get copper leakage in his offspring.

I like your first splash boy. He looks chunkier than the second splash guy so I'd probably keep him. I have had a few grow out of the comb wrinkle so he might.
Your second splash guy is smaller looking but he just might have a nice tail angle. It is very hard to tell how they will fill out once fully mature. You will have to decide if you want to work on getting rid of the middle toe feathering.

We all are pretty much working with what we have. It is really hard to find even close to perfect roos lol. I would keep the second and the third ones for sure.

I wasn't trying to be funny about him growing into his comb. Both Roy & Clyde had huge combs as younsters, and they are now size appropriate. Now Blue Butt on the other hand, had a huge comb as a youngster, and it is still huge. His is a different shape though and sits on the back of his neck. Another point of cull for him besides his bum leg.

Another thing that may come into play with the combs this time of year, is the heat. They dissipate heat from the combs, so would this be a good time to judge them? As hot as it's been, everyone's combs here are fire engine red, and look fatter??

haha...I meant you were funny about the sending him to you....although it would be a pretty efficient way of getting your start with the blue coppers eh?

Oh, ok that went over my head!

Debbie I was gonna tell you I love Roy and Clyde's dark handsome looks. I would just be thrilled if they changed the standard to mahogany for the males. I really think it looks better! Let the wheatens have the lighter copper LOL! Yeah I know there is more differences than that but still...
I have one beefy mahogany boy with a really bad comb (like way too many points on it LOL) that I keep around just because he looks pretty.

Sib~

#1 looks like he just has some leakage in the hackles, it can be covered, but will take some time. Breed him to a girl that does not show any leakage at all or that is very dark.....I really like his blue color, nice and even. His comb is somewhat large for a 3 mos. old bird, but he could very well grow in to it. His comb reminds me of my Bill's comb...huge beefy and proud. Are these birds suppose to be solid blues? I'm asking because I see that you stated that you can't see any copper on the darker blue boy as of yet....if they are coppers then you will have a hard time breeding out the copper and not having it pop up in later offspring. Basically, I don't believe the copper can't be bred out.....I believe it can only be covered by using birds that have too many melanizers.

If they were my birds, I would keep the lighter blue bird and the darker blue bird.

AGREED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would love to see the boys have the darker mahogany......I love those darker males. Give me the dark...I'll work with that over too much red anyday. And yes Roy and Clyde are VERY HANDSOME BOYS!!!!!! They know it too!

Me too Lynette, that mahogany really adds drama to their look!

Roy has 5 points, but his blade has a ruffle at the very end. Still no DQ nor does it detract from the look. Clyde has 6 points, but I love the way his comb rides free, as it should in the back, and a nice smooth blade and general texture. They both look so similar when you first look at them, but when you study them, each have different things about them that can help in different situations. Clyde is a bit longer legged, but has a shorter back. Roy is shorter legged, but has a longer back and better tail set. Both are broad and heavy, and sweet, sweet boys, and after the tude of Pip and Blue Butt, I appreciate them all the more!

Debbi~ I wish you were my neighbor.....I'm going to be rehoming about 4- 10 week old Blue Copper cockerels this weekend...that don't have stupid combs and all pure Davis babies. I don't understand why everyone has to be so darn far away.

I agree...I feel like I'm in no man's land most of the time when it comes to the Marans. sure would be nice to have other breeders close by!

I'm really thankful for this forum tho....its about the best substitute for having Marans breeding neighbors me thinks!
