awwww....that's just too bad! He's a gorgeous color of blue! I haven't seen any of my marans with that penne comb influence that people have talked about yet....I'm keeping my fingers crossed I don't ever have to see it.... Is that what the bit at the back with the spikey bits is from?

Thanks for all the replies, very helpful! I hope i get everyone's questions if not, let me know and i'll take the photo or what not requested, thanks again!

this is the wrinkle on the splashes comb

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

They are all supposed to be from solid blue, that's why i was concerned when i saw some coopering on the big comb boy, i was on the look out for it in the other boys. big boy isnt even truly copper, its almost brassy. no sun damage there. when he was a chick he had an obscenely big comb too, it needs to stop growing for him to grow into it. I like the overall head shape, but i'm concerned about our cold winters.

So far this is the best of the 3 hens:

she will probably correct any top line issues, unless she lifts as she gets older. has very nice leg/foot feathering, is so far a solid dark blue, over all rather big, just needs to fill in. there's a sister similar but rubbed out tail, then a splash hen (clean legged) with a slighter build. if i had others to pick from i probably wouldn't keep her but having only 3 to start with the splash can stay for now

So the general consensus is see what the top 3 boys do then? And i'm on the right track with the 3 pheasant type boys? they all have flat backs, pointed tails, and narrow like that. height wise they are on par with the others, just dont convey that massive look.

As for coppering, the big comb blue has a wee brassyness to him(only in hackles, bothe saddle and wings are clear so far. I see a bit in a slight splash too, but its the one thats on the chopping block. the dark blue and wide splash both show nothing so far.

Did i get it all? hehe
Thanks again

sounds like you are on the right track to me Syble...I think that the wrinkle in the comb isn't too horrible. I'd give it some time and see if it irons itself out as he grows. I had a cockerel that was pretty bad when he hatched and had planned on culling him, but when you posted I got it in my mind I'd go check him again to see if its improved....it has done pretty well...so I think i will hold onto him and see how he continues to develop. I just wish it would cool down so the birds will eat and drink like normal and then I can make another pass through culling for freezer camp.

My splash boys from Helen also have some of that brassy/copper coloring coming in. Not what I was going for at all....kind of bums me out, but I do have a use for one as a test hatch and I'll see if we can't get Debbi fixed up with the most coppered one for her blue copper project....

Alright, this isnt him but I found a pic of a VERY ugly boy I culled a while back. He was hatched from purchased eggs and what a train wreck that hatch was. Never again. (I ended up culling every bird from that hatch).

Anyway, ignore his obvious sprig, but see the smaller bump

What do you think that is?

yeah...i would classify that in the sprig category in my birds. While the bumps may not look too terrible, for me I consider it an indicator that the sprig gene is there. The only way I would use him is in a test hatch and that would probably take several months before you know the results of that...and I would only do that if I didn't have another prospect growing out to work with. When it comes to combs it can be really hard to work a flaw like that out once it gets into the bloodline. Even if it doesn't show in one mating doesn't mean it won't pop up somewhere on you later. Combs can be so frustrating sometimes eh?

I agree. You do not want to mess with side sprigs. I did a test hatch with a nice new blue copper rooster and half of his offspring: 3 splash cockerals and one blue copper girl turned out to have side sprigs. The babies side sprigs are more obvious that the father's. The father's was hidden by his feathering where the comb attatched to his head way down there where I didn't notice it at all until I went looking for it. Now I make darn sure I look everywhere on the comb even where it attatches to thier head under those little feathers. Now I have to cull the whole mess of them except the female I am putting in my layer (not to be bred) pen. One of the splash boys is huge and really beautiful, it is a shame.

Thanks Ivy and Bravo.

Bravo ~ That is definately a side sprig! Did I mention my Blue Butt has one just like it? It started very small, and almost white colored, almost like a wart towards the back end of his comb. At first, I thought he had been fighting and someone bit him there, and it was healing. Nope! It's still there today, and much bigger !!

Pink ~ That boy's comb looks just like my little guy I posted a few pages back! That's carnation! You can pick them out easily when they first start to sprout a little bit of comb. When they first start, it almost looks like an "ingrown" comb towards the back. This one came courtesy of one of my hens, she has one too!

She will be culled out and off the farm. I don't even want those ugly things in my laying flock!! Here's the little guy.
