Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

If nobody has any good pics of what a side sprig looks like on a hen I can provide one lol. I did a test mating with a new bl copper roo awhile back and its a good thing too, because I got 3 splash males and 1 bl cpr female all with side sprigs. That pair that threw them is history now as far as breeding. The hens are in the regular laying pen and roos in the freezer lol. I am always going to test mate from now on before I just throw a bunch in the breeding pen together. I don't like suprises (at least the bad ones

Okay, I have a question. Someone said the carnation comb was from penendesenca influence that was introduced to some marans when they were first brought to the U.S. Can anyone tell me if this is a problem in ALL the different lines? Davis? Jean? or whichever.

My marans are pure Wade-Jeane line. I have not mixed them. I have not had anything that looks like a carnation comb, but I did have one chick with a small side sprig. He was culled.

Anyone know which lines have penenedesenca influence?

Hello fellow Maransiens!

It's been awhile since I posted in this thread! Been real busy and this one moves so fast it's hard to keep up sometimes!

I have hatched me a rumpless Black Copper pullet! Has anyone else had one of these pop up recently? She is now about 13 weeks old. I'll have to get a pic of her later today to post.

I am having a fit with broody Black Coppers! No sooner do I get one broke I have 2 more going broody! I am tired of the bare butts on my girls!

You are telling me about broodies! The Black coppers are the first of my Marans to go Broody on me, I keep dunking their heads in water but they find it refreshing because of the heat and go back to searching for eggs!

Of all my hens the Black Coppers are the broodiest......I have one now that just keeps trying and I already let them raise a batch of chicks....hummm if we could train them to set in December I'd like it for me.
