Hey Lisa, was this one of the birds that had that feather triangle by the tail when she was younger?? Remember me telling you that the triangle=long back? Just wondered if she was one of them. All of mine that had that triangular cushion when young, tend to have nice long backs when older. She's a beauty!

No, the feather triangle ones were from my own stock and are laying and I am hatching their eggs out now.....

How did their backs turn out?

Just went out to the run one more time, and therrrrrre's Billy! Don't know where he was hiding. Pip and him went right in. Old Pip is pretty good at odd things like that, if nothing else!

I am no expert but from what I have read the white feathers will usually leave after a molt so you may not have to worry about that since they are young. If I am wrong someone jump in and tell both of us the truth.

Sometimes they will molt out at the Juvie molt, BUT many times they will not!
I have a BCM rooster that is a year and half old and he has a white feather in each wing.
It has gone from being totally white to being 1/2 white BUT it is still a DQ!

Juvie molt is around 5 months.... so if they aren't gone by say 7 months..... awwwww they may never go away!

Thank you all for the information: Did anyone see the pics of the cockerels that I have already purchased. The comb on the one bird has a big V in the middle and I think a sprig on the side. Plus the white feathers on both birds.

So, I suppose that tomorrow when I go look at the pullets I probably should think about getting some cockerels too if they don't have those issues.

Any thing else I should look for?

Thoughts on this. Susan

Lisa,

I do not think this roo is from my eggs. My roo has thrown roos that are all on the lighter side with orange eyes and lots of copper and about half having more than 10% copper flecking on the breast. THe hens have been on the dark side, one no copper with dark eyes and, the rest with various amounts of copper hackles and orange eyes.

I've got to get out and get some pictures of my roos but, they are free range and camera shy.

I would just get your pullets tomorrow.
Finding the right roo is the hardest thing or so it seems to me.

If your girls aren't show quality, then at least you will be able to eat the eggs.
Girls are so easy to sell that if you decide to change out your girls you will have absolutely no trouble getting rid of them.

I WOULD wait on the boys until you have seen enough examples of what to look for.... Scan the earlier pages of this thread.
LOOK for pictures with the commentary attached. SKIP all the chit chat and just go after the pictures. It won't take long to get a really good idea of what they should look like and what items to watch out for.

When they are small, you really can not judge them by very much - -- combs and leg feathering.
As they get older, you can judge more.
COLOR is something you really can not make the final judgement on until after that juvie molt.... so 6 - 7 months of age.

Good luck!

Well that means this boy is from the stock that was winning at Newnan, Ga.
So, I will just to hang onto this furry / Hairy cockerel and see what he developes into.
He is only 20 weeks old..... so he has plenty of time to blossom into something wonderful or horrible!

I do not know if it is just these pictures but, I think her legs are darker than what I am getting from my rooster. The coloring, comb and, butt look like my pullets but not those legs. What about those other eggs you hatched from me?
