Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

morning everyone.... had a successful trip to and from gardner, ks for the exotic sale. I saw a few things I liked, but only came home with one box that my uncle and I went halves on since otherwise we would have been bidding against each other. We bought a gorgeous trio of coronation sussex that are about a year and a half old. I know I already have some growing out at home but I really am liking the looks of these birds. Talked with the guy that brought them and feel good about the purchase. They are currently in the garage in quaranteen and his crow is absolutely booming! I love it!

Anyways...there were some black copper marans and cuckoo marans there. I really was not impressed.....they all needed some significant work for sure... I almost bought another breed as well...but missed the two boxes when they went by talking out which trio of sussex we were going to buy. The same guy brought the breed I wanted too and got his info so maybe i can get some from him later on. They were cream brabanters. I have seen them in pics but never in person and I really liked them. They are goofy and curious as anything.

Sounds like you had fun. I would of wanted the Cream Brabanters too. Pretty cool that you saw some there. Nice score on the coronations. I'm still thinking I might get some Coronations once we get our flocks thinned down this fall.

I am still working on finishing up our pens. I have been busy with going back to class and doing other stuff lately instead of chicken stuff lol. I went and saw Contagion (the movie) the other day. It was pretty good

ADORABLE!!!!!! Loves me that little blue one!

2 roos and 2 pullets in the first photo and I believe both are roos in the second photo.

So we were right on the 1st photo in our guessing- it hard to see in the photo but the 2 lighter ones combs seem to be pinking up and are larger.

I was wondering about the 2 babies and thinking that they were roos because of the way the feathers are coming in- it's okay they are part of my testing of the comb on my Blue Cuckoo roo!

x2 on the blue one but they are ALL CUTE !!!!!

oh yeah? back to school? What sort of classes are you taking? medical field related I'm guessing?

I need to get cracking on pens too....yarg. I survived the trip in the car tho..so that's good news for my back. We'll see how it holds out over the next weekend. I'm going on this thing called the Junk Jaunt. Its about a 400 mile loop in the middle of nebraska and its just people galore selling stuff...anything and everything you can imagine. Lots of antiques and etc...its a great time. I meet awesome people and I buy lots of stuff for art project materials to use through the year to make things to resell. It works out great and get amazing deals. There's also a plant nursery out there I love going to! Bonus!

Yeah...I was really surprised to see the Brabanters...they are little characters. I spent a lot of time in that row looking at them and talking to them and figuring out how much trouble I would be in if I were to bring another breed home...hahah I think I will just see about getting some in the spring from that guy...he doesn't live too far from me.

OH man 400 miles of yard, junk, and plant sales!!! Are you serious? I *wish* I could go too. I'd have to bring a uhaul LOL! Not fair

My dd and my youngest son both love to make stuff from junk. Its amazing what you can do with a little trash lol. I like to go to the Habitat for Humanity store and find 'stuff to make stuff out of' for my garden or patio.

You know its always trouble when you go getting another breed because after the breed comes the different varieties of the breed

Then you get too many again. Not that this has ever stopped me lol.

I'm taking advanced pathophysiology and advanced pharmacology (pharmacotherapeutics) (5oo+ levels) towards my masters. I was gonna take organic chemistry and lab too but couldn't get it for the time I needed this semester so maybe next time (oh darn haha). I also have another clinical based class that I will have to do on the weekends starting in November. So that sucks every weekend will be working.

Am new to the chicken world. Formerly showed, trained and judged Arabian horses, that was 30 years or so.....then bred and showed Pomeranians and Japanese Chin, plus finished two Brussels Griffons. As the years rolled on, at the suggestion of a fellow dog friend, I now have chickens. My dog friend sent me 9 Black Copper Marans chicks.......of that bunch ended up with 3 pullets who will be 6 months old on Oct. 1st. I would appreciate any and all comments, negative or positive, on the three pullets. Am Many thanks for your replies.

Owned by three Poms, one Japanese Chin, one Toy Poodle, two Light Brahmas, one partridge Cochin

Welcome, MaryL. I, too, am from a dog upbringing, but I just have to say, that chicken are way cooler, and less cutthroat in the show ring. I still consider myself a newbie, and am learning everyday.
You're gonna love it here, I know I am! Roberta

Oh, that 400 miles would be over quickly for me! I may have a 400 mile taste, but only a 3 mile pocketbook!

Seems they used to have one on the east coast too, that ran all the way down 95. Never made that one either. This area here is really devoid of antiques, I so miss New England in that regard!

Lynette, sounds like you'll have a full plate for awhile, eh? You brainiac, you!

Vicki, I've only seen pics of the Branbanters, but they do look intrigueing. Congrats on the ones you did bring home!

More storms here today. Got a brief pause, but looks like more is on the way in. Soggy Silkies and soaked Marans....it ain't pretty!

Hi Mary, I am having trouble getting the photos to show up. I haven't showed dogs but from the people I know, who have, they are really suprised at how laid back 'chicken shows' are in comparison. I think you will have a lot of fun. You have picked a breed in Marans that is very challenging because they are still relatively new to the US and so far only the Black Copper variety has been approved by the APA. There is still a lot of genetic diversity and thus work to be done on Marans so they need all the help they can get of people who are dedicated to seeing them become the best that they can be.
