Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Totally off topic but I HAVE to comment: RanchoDelPolloLoco - I so TOTALLY voted for your avatar picture for the 2012 BYC calendar. Absolutely, hands down, my favourite out of ALL the entries. (And I submitted some!

Me too! LOVE IT!

JEREMY: March sounds great for me too. Hmm...definitely bring those AM eggs. I'd be WAY too tempted to acquire a new breed if you brought the Orp eggs!

PINK: I will work on getting a decent non-related rooster to breed her to. The pullet doesn't always hold her wing goofy like in the pictures and none of my other pullets seem to do it, so I'm 'hoping' it will be easier to breed out with the help of Don's advice.

I am not necessarily worried about it....you don't have to get different roo before we swap eggs. I have patience and will work with it, she is too nice of a bird not to test out.

That is why I was double checking with Don...I wanted to make sure that I can do it with my boys, which I think I can.

Now if Jeremy had a roo in with his Blue Copper girl too I would be one big happy camper and get eggies from both of you!!!
(I know, I know Jeremy....you are waiting for some Lil' Bill eggies.

his Copper in the hackles seems to be "bleeding down" from top to bottom he is coming out of juvie molt and his neck is getting darker like some have said the white covers up.
All these are 6 months old but no eggies!

Pink, you must have missed my "stupid comb" post a few pages back... it looks as if my only BC girl sprouted a partial carnation comb overnight.

I don't know how closely related my Blue Copper girl Ponyo is to this BC hen, I know they came from the same pen but as I understood it there were multiple roos in the pen that produced them... anyways, I don't know if I should try to breed either of them now out of fear of passing the potential stupid comb on.

Le sigh.

LOVELY!!!!!! Looks like they are starting to red up in the combs and wattle area...shouldn't be too long before you get eggies!

Question about the males....Are both the Splash and the Blue Copper are from me? Does the Blue Cpr boy have the stupid comb? I can't tell in the photos....oh and does he have white in the hackles? By "bleeding down" do you mean that it is darker at the top of the hackle and then lightens up and then darkens again near the bottom of the hackle?

Hey, Jeremy. Don't quote me, but most of us do not use birds with this defect. It's taken a LONG time to get it bred out, I'd hate to see someone work it back in.... JMO, though.

Jeremy~

I did not miss your post....I am slowly re-reading the thread this morning. Sometimes I takes me days to re-read this thread and respond or ask questions...but I am with you and I swear the stupid combs happen overnight even though I know deep down they do not, it just seems like it.
That is too bad about the BC Jeremy....I know exactly how you feel about it since I have had the stupid thing come up this year too.
