i'm down closer to lincoln out in the country. its about a 15 minute drive to get to into lincoln for me....so id guess we are about an hour and a half....maybe a bit less away from one another. how are the girls laying for ya or are ya still waitin? where'd ya get the solid blues from? they aren't easy to find...usually they are coppers that are overmelanized or dont show the copper.

good deal...do you plan on hatching the eggs? if so,i might be able to help ya a bit if your lookin to get more birchens out of the crosses

it will take a bit to get there but can be done

Yes, I will be planning to hatch some eggs and would appreciate all the help I can get. I won't be hatching until January at the earliest, probably a bit later than that. I only have these 4 Marans and they are in a temp pen until spring. I need to build another coop hopefully in the spring, in a duplex form for Marans on one side and my Lav Ameraucana project on the other side. I have a couple of small breeding pens, and was it you who advised me to use the solid black and the splash to start? Seperating them and their eggs out so I know what hatches what? That will be my plan to start when we are ready. But I need to have a bigger permanent home for this flock before I start hatching babies!!

It probably was me. I've had a really long week and just got home from working on what should have been my day off...so i'm a bit fried in the brain at the moment. I'm sure once I get a good night sleep my brain will 'reset' and my memory will kick back in again

I still feel like i'm trying to play catch up because I can't figure out where this year has gone!

They are laying decent some of them are really spuratic lay 2times a week and others lay regularly every other day ran or shine. but they are decent colored eggs. I cant wait till spring to put some under my broodys.
Honestly I picked most of these up from a breeder up by souix city... He only wanted the blue coppers and black coppers. so i took them...they are pretty nice hens. He said they all had the copper gene. but i thought the copper was either showing or not there i guess i didnt realize it was 2 chroms that made the copper coloring

Sorry it took so long for me to reply We just switched from satellite internet to Verizon's mobile hotspot and its kind of throwing us a fit!

This is my BCM Roo... He is technically a throw back because "too little copper" But Im pretty sure he is perfect seems how i like all black but i have to admit the copper adds alittle something

no worries...my internet gives me fits sometimes too out here in the country. It is usually when I am in a spot that I neeeed it that it won't behave. How annoying is that?

The copper gene is still there even if the girls are solid if they come from copper stock...so don't be surprised if it shows itself down the line. Either way, they will probably throw you some nice chicks. What color boys do you have there?

what's that boy in the background? And also...do you raise any other breeds? I love finding more people that aren't too far from me that raise poultry...let alone the marans. What is your goal with your marans?
