sounds like your girl is a splash. Genetics indeed can do crazy things and can hide under the surface for a while before it shows. That second boy is not a blue birchen...the coloring is off...hence being a sport.

i just figured i didn't wing the genetic lotto.... the one real bircheren looking roo might still have blue recessive somewhere in him and if the splash hens are any use i can try.... otherwise i can recross him with my blue andulsians to try and bring the blue out. my 2 blue hens throw blue over 50% of the time and oddly enough the males are blacker and females more blue. just figured i could try and put more blue genes in.
I have noticed that the "blue birchen's" do not have leg feathering so i assume they are somewhere decended from the english import while Poirot is a real french copper marans.

Do you have how the blue gene works written down anywhere for reference? It will be something you will use a lot if you plan to work with him and get blues. I would definitely steer away from any outcrossing as you further will end up muddying the gene pool and will not have pure Marans. If your splash girl turns out well....crossing a black silver birchen to a splash marans will give you 100% blue...the blues will vary in how they exhibit the birchen however. It all depends what is behind the splash too, like what cross produced her... that kind of thing.

I hope I'm making sense. I'm paraphrasing

Hey guys, I wanted to make some egg ornaments for Christmas. Since money is a little tight this year everyone is getting homemade presents.

Quail eggs Maran Eggs and EE eggs are on my list . Does anyone have unviable/unhatchable or even inedible Maran eggs for sale?

eh... there is no real 'recipe' i just figured my roosters are oddly recessive. i can cross them with any hen and get the hens color but with some of his influence (leg feathering, size). I have fun playing with hybrids and had a good solid red brahma line going till i got bored. brahma x silver wyndotte has interesting results... and turken crossed with anything is cool. the blues are my fav color.

I am now curious what that second marans rooster would be called....

I do...there are quite a few on the thread here. I just got back to bed from getting sick. I'm feeling pretty crappy tonight...the forum is great for being able to rest in bed and talk chickens...I really wanted to get out to see them after I got out of work...but didn't make it all the way through the day. I feel terrible...I think I might have caught stomach flu.

there is a blue gene chart that helps to navigate the blues and how to get them. What are you wanting to do with the Marans you have?

Small cans of spray paint, along with some glitter.....is cheap! ( besides, how do you think these people get these darkest brown eggs?)
