Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

there is a blue gene chart that helps to navigate the blues and how to get them. What are you wanting to do with the Marans you have?

Honestly? (sheepsh) I was planning to just breed to a certain quality level (not show but try to keep it true with egg color being the priority and looks second) and sell them in my area. I am the only one with rare breeds... I also have Icelandics... at least with that 'breed' i do not have to worry about standards... Mine free range and i live in the mountains so... i allow mine to be subjected to the local environment in hopes to shape an overall stronger bird. I feel its a shame when pretty birds cannot and will not move far from the coop or know how to catch mice. I guess Eggs, Utility then Looks? if showing isn't my goal does this seem reasonable?

Seems reasonable, IF you are honest with the buyers that you are crossing in other breeds with your birds. A Marans crossed on an Andalusian is a mutt, not a Marans. This is where all the problems that are now popping up came from; folks crossing the Penedesenca with the Marans, hence all the funky combs now showing in the Marans. I have no problem with folks crossing their birds, they are yours and so is the feed bill. What I do have a problem with, is them selling them as "pure", and rare breeds, when in reality, they are mutts.

the show is Nov Sat the 5th and Sun the 6th. Check in for birds starts on Friday night, but usually there is not much to look at. The best time to go is on Saturday, that's when everything happens. Sunday is just the awards and coop out and no one really wants to stand around and chat as much as on Saturday. The easiest way to get there is to just go I 80 like you are going to lincoln and exit off the Waverly Exit right before Lincoln then turn left onto hwy 6...take hwy 6 to 84th street...can't miss it as it is the second stop light after the exit one. You will take a left onto 84th (the only way you can turn as it only goes to the south)...and drive until you get to the next light...at that light turn left. You will be able to see the Lancaster Event Center long before you get to the intersection. It will be in the middle building and should be able to get in one of the side doors...if the weather is nice they will have the huge doors open too

Aw heck I been there many a times in the nebraska Horse expo

Hey Vicki, glad you are feeling somewhat better. Storms in here this morning kept me off the puter. You guys sure have been busy in here since yesterday, had to catch up!

No more action in the bator, so tomorrow morning, I will pull the plug. Come to think of it, 5 chicks kept in the house will be MUCH nicer than 13 if the weather gets really cold too quick to get them outside! Always have to look for that silver lining!

Good deal!! Did you have any birds you were wanting to show or are you going just to see what's there? The entries are due in the mail by thursday!

Oh, by the way, glad to know you Anna!

Poor Gigantor! Both of my boys, Roy & Clyde, are molting right now. No tails to speak of, and Clyde is puking hackle feathers left and right! The girls are all done now, and luckily recovered from all the roo-back syndrome. One of my girls, Flossy, REFUSES to give up her apron! I have tried three times now to take it off, and it's like she is refusing to give up her prom dress!

Silly girl, is completely feathered in now, but she just thinks she is IT in her little purple dress. Silly birds...

its that time of year eh? Where its not so much fun going out to the pens...cause it hard to look at them in all their sadness...I just hope they feather out fast. its getting colder everyday. I don't know if I'm gonna end up making it to sedalia with everything going on here...but I need to do some more rearranging and culling in my breeder pens from last year to get ready for winter. I also have to prep the stalls and the chicken house for winter by clearing everything out, wipin down the walls, puttin down flea and mite dust, stalldry, then put in fresh wood chips, which work so much better for me. It won't take long, I've just been holding off as long as I could until my back was feeling a bit better. I'll try to do all that this weekend while I have time off. My work schedule has been really strange lately making it hard to get much done while it is light out
