Neosporin is probably a good idea and I will try that -- thank you! No, they are not crowded and last night was only the second night out of the hatcher. The one that is pecking the feet(I sat and watched trying to figure out what was going on) is a large chick with the largest comb(cockerel?) and no feathers at all on his feet and very few on his legs. I have taken the 3 that got pecked out and now he seems to have stopped all together. I think Neosporin is still a good idea for the 3 with bloody toes in the other brooder.

Do you have any of that "No Pick" purple stuff. I have used it on chicks that are toe peckers..I found it to work pretty good. Funny to watch the chicks shake their heads after they get a little taste of it. It doesn't take much either.

Pink, No I do not have any--where can you get it? I do not think I have even seen it before. If I am going to raise Marans I think I might need to get some. I have now been told they are a little more active than cochins and tend to pull at feathers from time to time. Lets see, red light and "No Pick" . I am starting a list. I hope for now the ones that are seperated out do not peck on each other and with a little neosporin they heal!! Thank you all for your help!!

If ypor chicks are in a brooder where you have a white light bulb, that is your problem. Change to a red or blue light bulb and the problem will go away.

It's made by Rooster Booster I believe and I get it at the feed store...it's purple and is made from Pine Tar. Call me crazy but I actually like the smell of it.

Blu-Kote is a blue spray with a germicidal and fungicidal. There is also Purple Venitian (sp?), but I pretty sure the Blu-Kote has that in it. I suggested the Neosporin, as most folks have that on hand anyway, and it works. I have since gotten some Blu-Kote, and it also helps heal the roo trodden hens' backs too. Good for all kinds of ouches!

Agreed...get a red or blue light too.

Blu-Kote is different and is used for anitseptic purposes usually, it does not have the pine tar in it. The "No Pick" stuff is specifically for picking issues.

I have a bottle of the pick stuff....I'll go get a photo of it while I am getting photo of the 2 little chicklets under the broody.

Ok thanks!...so how much does your mixture once its all mixed up make and how many chickens do you feed with it? is it a replacer feeding...where you don't do the daily rations...or is it in addition to it? I thought of a few questions that I should have thought of before. I've got all my pumpkins to store for the winter now. I will be working on processing them slowly, and the other pumpkins while they are waiting will be held in my root cellar on storage shelves.

I make enough to fill a 5 gallon bucket for the 45 birds that I have now, when I had more birds I made 2- 5 gallon buckets of it. I take away all other feed for the day and replace with this....when this is all gone they can have regular rations back. I do mix in some wet all purpose to make it go just a little farther and to add some more substance (not like it needs it...it's so thick to begin with), it is not much, maybe a 2 pound scoop or so.

What's this? We are "carving pumkins" today! What do you use this for? Chickens or baking?

Vicki- hoping you splash marans lays an egg!

Yes, that Blue fascinates me. I understand that the Blue Marans is one of the least numerous in the US. I'm hoping s/he turns out to be one that is worth breeding Marans chicks from.

yeah...they are hard to come by....a lot of them...even if they appear to be solid blue are really over melanized and are hiding copper or birchen genes under there....So, hopefully you'll get a solid blue. Test mating is always a good way to test that out

I'm gonna have a few to do that with this next year as well...

It's too early for my brain to work... what color should I test-mate with?

haha....we use it for feeding to the chickens during the colder months...at least that's when I am going to feed it. I had asked Kim for her recipe and was asking a couple questions on measurements. I plan to take my recipe and add some of the things Kim adds to see how they like it

I'm feelin pretty good since I found that place online that sells the spices really reasonably in bulk.
