Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

anyone in the north texas or southern oklahoma area, bring it on! I would LOVE some better quality marans! Is it really called crow head? I wondered about that, but as I have nothing to compare them to, I just guessed it was part of the breed!

I'm not sure if there is a more technical name for it or not, but it can appear in any breed...and on male and female. I've heard tons of different reasoning for the main influence that causes it, but do notice it appears a ton in hatchery stock. I don't know if it is because it is not culled for, or if it has to do with other breeds being bred in...there are some breeds that tend to have more of a crow head feel....ironically they tend to be the birds I am least attracted to...i love the round full bodies birds with nice round heads and sturdy necks...

What color Marans are you lookin for specifically? That might help narrow down if someone in your general area might have something you are lookin for.

If I was to call any of them a pullet, it would be the chick in the last pic. Watch for their combs and wattles to develop and turn really pink, and watch their legs to see how thick they are; roos will have thicker legs. Also watch their stance and attitude. Roos are usually more upright and more confident looking. This is just my gut feeling from what I see on the monitor, but I have been wrong a lot of times in person, with my own birds too!

As I said, just my opinion...we all have one.

I really like the black coppers...I like roundy head birds too! I love the look of birds like orps and wyandottes...they are just so appealing looking. I don't want to pay a huge amount though...there is a TON of predators in my area.

no problem...there are ways to get a start without putting a huge amount of money into them. Are you set up for hatching or would you strictly be needing chicks or started birds? I'm tryin to ask some questions to maybe help you find someone that might have what you are looking for

That's my problem too! The leggy-guy is a chest bumper (which super worries me!), but even though those legs are long, they are still slender and feminine...at five weeks, their combs are still not any bigger, and still pale yellow. I am just going to keep my fingers crossed that they are still girls!

I know someone if you are looking for Wyandottes....I don't know any details about what he might have or how he sells or anything, but I believe he lives in Shawnee...is that anywhere near your neck of the woods?

Im not set up for incubating...the best I have is broody breeds, but I have yet to see if my girls will go broody (big girls haven't started laying yet, and my older girls got slaughtered by what I believe to be a fox one night). I am awesome at starting with day-olds though! (I have considered hatching, but what to do with the roos, and I would need an incubator...I think hatching eggs would give me a better chance at that gorgeous egg color).

Can you explain "crow head" to me? My first thought is a bird with a head shaped like a crow but seeing how I am not that familiar with a lot of chicken breeds, I wanted to check.
