Haha I posted the pics I'm sure he has bad points he doest have featherd shanks but All of my hens have nice feathering so that could be worked on. But I mainly just interested in how the birchen color works for future reference. I have 2 progects @ the momment and don't really need any more but just always need knowledge.

I am just getting into Birchens, so I am not 100%, but in my mind I would say yes that something can be done about the gold leakage and yes they can be used. Just like selecting and breeding for darker or deeper copper in the Black Coppers and Blue Coppers. the Silver Birchens would be the same... but a person would select and breed for better silver. My large Birchen boy has some gold leakage......I am test mating him to a Blue Copper (who has very little copper...just a slight hue) hen that I believe may carry the silver Birchen gene, the offspring should be split for gold/silver.....I will raise up the best pullets that show the best silver coloration and the least amount of gold leakage and I will breed them back to their father to see if the next gen. will (should) produce even better and cleaner silver.

So after I said all this.....Vicki can come by now and correct me.

The first 2 are from acouple months ago $ the last one was a really long time ago but he's. Molting nw so hopefully these will work.
So if I bred this roo to solid blue girls would I get hens with heavy coppering?

WOW! He's a biggun! Pretty! Love the blue!

I don't believe so, no, but you will probably get chicks that will show gold leakage that would come from this male. If she is truly a solid Blue she shouldn't throw copper, pure solids are based on Silver. Breeding him to a solid blue I think would be ideal. Have you test mated her? And if so, what were the offspring like? Did you grow any out to see how they matured?

Just wanted to share some new pics of a few of our Birchen Marans=) We just love these birds!!!!

Here are some of the girls eggs. They just recently started to lay. Hope they darken up. We are new to Marans and dont know to much about them. Dont plan to show them. We just love the beautiful black Birchen color, dark eggs and real good disposition on these birds.

AWESOME! Glad you got the humidity worked out!

Got 22 eggs moved into the Brinsea (including 6 BCMs that look hopeful and 6 Cuckoos, 4 of which look good. And, of course, the lone Silkie which required some extra padding around the egg in with all those big ones!!) Lower humidity level so hopefully some of these eggs that are actively growing will actually make it to hatch!!

The humidity pump is not supposed to be gravity feed but apparently this one benefitted from the kick start.

Best hatching vibes coming to ya!

No I haven't been able to test breed them cause I don't have a solid blue roo. But I have 4 solid blue hens.

I have 3 eggs that are on the 22day.2 of them hatched last night. I know if the humidity is too high the air sac can be filled with water. their sirsacs are clear nothing dark in them.. but is there anyway to tell if there is water in the airsac. When the second chick hatched the humidity was up to 80%
At what humidity are you likely to get water in the airsacs?

Nice coloring on those birds. Looks to me though, that your roo may have a huge side sprig, or even a carnation comb? Not a good thing if you are breeding or selling to those who may want to. Do you have a closer shot of his comb you could post?
