I don't believe you will be able to tell the boys from the girls until about 3 weeks old. Then you can start to guess. Have to wait for comb development with them.

Good luck! And pictures are ALWAYS welcome!!

Thank you BarnGoddess01 I guess it's just a lottery then never no what it gonna get and at least I don't have to worry about the breeder trying to sell me cockrels he doesn't want to keep. These will be culls he doesn't want because they don't have feathered shanks but I just want eggs and I think there pretty either way. Plus he's discounting them since they don't meet standards.

Ask Pinkchick about this when she gets on here.....I think she sexes day-olds by the length or number of little bitty wing feathers on the birds. I know she has a good method.

Morning Everyone!

I can sex my birds pretty accurately by the wing..but it is not always 100%. Other lines are harder for me to guess....however I have noticed that on all of the breeds that I work with that the tell tale signs I watch for on all of them are pretty consistent and the same. There are common sexed traits that all breeds share, it is a matter of learning your birds and watching them.

I don't count the number of feathers, but rather look at how they grow in and the length of the primary and secondary flight feathers...I also watch the tail feather growth. I can only make a guess at about day 3 then I have to band them and watch them, but with my birds I am usually right....however I have been wrong many times.

My females tend to have primary and secondary flight feathers that are basically the same length. My males tend to have shorter secondaries and longer primaries. Also I watch the tail growth....my females tend to grow in tail feathers faster than the males. Also around a week or 10 days I have noticed that the shoulder feathers just at the bottom of the neck where it comes down to the back and shoulders come in faster on females vs. the males.

HI! Glad you sold your birds that you took yesterday. It will make the winter easier for sure.

Hey....BTW....Thank you for you words of advise about the Birchens and breeding. I am just learning and after reading your response I see where I am confused and I need to study some more. Thanks again.

No problem...I'm still learning some of the ins and outs of the breeding when it comes to how quickly one will get on track when trying a cross with say black coppers, blue coppers and solids if one can find them. There are factors that also will limit speed at which things will get done..mainly because of other faults and etc that limit the quality of stock available to work with.

Oh...by the way. I have to PM you about something. It is most exciting...odd, even. but I'll take it!

Good morning all

It must be this crazy wind making all the roos crazed this morning! Winds are gusting upwards of 50mph, luckily it's warm! Myron decided he was king of the run this morning, and was attacking all the other boys. Big mistake when he approached Roy!!

Not feeling so much like the king any more.

All the Silkies were tearing around too, like the sky was falling. Maybe cause the wind was blowing their "hair" back, they can now see, so therefore we can RUN!!!

Silly birds, the lot of them..
