Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yes! My girls last year layed all winter long, through that awful cold. They didn't even start laying until November, and layed straight on through till August this year. If I can ever get all of these darned roos gone, I would have room for more hens. May just end up keeping a layer flock in the end anyway; can't seem to find anyone with birds that don't have the DQ problems I've been dealing with.

The lights aren't worth it, Debbi. Go with the 4 AM porch light and hope for the best!!!

What VC is going through REALLY helps me put things in perspective.

Nooo don't use a porch light at 4am...the roos will CROW! LOL. I have to keep everything pitch dark as long as possible cuz the little terds will crow if I leave any lights on. SOmetimes when someone goes in the bathroom and the dang roos can see the light go on from thier coops or the security light goes on then the guineas screech and the stupid roos will start crowing

They also crow if the train goes by and they can hear it grrr.

My roos always alert the neighbours when I come home late. I've just learned to accept it!!!

(First time I heard those boogers crow at 2 AM I nearly fell down. I have learned NOT to disturb the roos.

Doesn't bother me, it's misic to my ears. Now, should it bother the neighbor up the hill, TOO BAD!! I have to listen to his dadgummed Coon Hounds bawl ALL day long!! Heck, I wish I had 40 Laughing Roosters!!

I think we should! Man those are awesome!!! I don't even hear my roos any more, I guess I block them out like I did a whining child?

Now those laughing roos would be something else! I think all of my roos here started crowing at a young age, due to being raised in the house, and I'd "teach" them how to crow every morning. Wow, by the time these birds got outside, they'd really be yucking it up!
