sad I had to miss out on the conversation today while I was at work. Went back and read through everything. I'm really hoping that more research will be put into the carnation comb genetics in the Marans for sure. I haven't had the problem, but sure do want to know what to do in case I ever run across it. I know the simple answer is to cull, but I'm naturally curious and want to know how things work and why.... yup...total nerd

Then to me, that says he is a "carrier"; he carries one gene. If Gnarles' looks like JR's on the blade, that is carnation. Got a recent pic??

The little round nubbs....it is not carnation, it just has extra little nubbs on the blade. Now I've posted these photos before and was told there was nothing wrong with his comb. The only question on his comb was from Don and he asked if he saw a sprig on it...well there is not sprigs............................................

Looks clean as a wwwhistle!

This has been one of the best topics since I have come on board to this forum. I for one, have enjoyed the passion and information that his being put out by everyone. BUT here is what I am missing! Being a visual and tactile learner, I would greatly appreciate it if someone would post a photo of a "carnation" comb and a comb with "sprigs" on Marans.

I have seen them on Penes but not on Marans to that degree.

I know I would benefit in seeing a photos of the two comb issues being discussed and it could benefit others down the road. Just an idea

There are lots of fotos of "Bad Combs" on here....the trick is finding them! Go back over the last 3 days' posts and you should see at least one that is a real dandy! Poor Roo has a mess on his head that looks like a root wad!

Here is a blue copper hen with a big comb and a sprig on the right side rear of it. She is in the layer pen now since she is such a sweetie pie and a good layer but not using her in my breeding program nor her parents which are gone now.

This is the blue copper girl (above's) brother. He is the splash in the front left of the screen and has an obvious sprig on the left side of his comb. I sure hated to cull this big beautiful guy. I got 3 males and 1 female chick with sprigs. The roo I bought (thier father) had the tiniest spring way down under the feathers where his comb attatched to his head. I hadn't noticed it until I went looking for it after all these babies from his first mating popped up with sprigs. Be sure to look good where their combs attatch to thier heads under those tiny feathers!! The mother did not have any sprigs at all but must have had the gene for it. (Not all these guys are from the same hatch...one (the silver duckwing looking fella) is an ameraucana x phx, some are blue coppers from another set of parents and some of the females are blue marans)
