Sorry can I jump in with a Marans gender question?

This is what my 19 day old cockerels look like . ..

And this is my one month old cockerels . ..

Depending on how quickly your little one matures, it may not be a male. I would wait a couple of more weeks before getting rid of it.
You could ask the person you got them from how quickly the wattles show up and the combs turn pink BEFORE getting rid of the chick.

Are you seeing any pink in that comb yet? ? ?​

Beware you might just fall in love with him. He looks like a sweetie LOL! I have WAY too many roosters. I really should downsize but then there's the chatty 3 little guys who follow me and just talk talk talk. Then there is the big lav orp who is the BEST nanny for all the babies be it kitten, duck, or chicks.
Then there is the roo who is my body guard..then there is my sweet key west rooster whose colors remind me of an island sunset...then and then and then....awww FEEEERGET IT LOL! This is why I have too many roosters

I used to be obsessed with combs, then I was obsessed with tail set, then I was obsessed with back length, now I think it is about getting just the right copper balance. It seems like its always the roosters that I have some nit picking thing to pick at...

So cute, I didn't know you were hatching chicks again! I'm kinda thinking of waiting till at least Feb before hatching any more.

ok seeing your guys gives me hope

He is the youngest of my very varied flock and today I swear the bottom if his comb was turning pink!

Hello everyone!
I am new to BYC, I have always had chickens, all hatchery stock, and always a little giant incubator with 10% hatch rate of course, but until this year ( and some"ameraucanas" that where not all bearded, and laid some white eggs) did I start doing research and discover BYC and the world of gorgeous purebred chickens. Now I'm hopelessly addicted. I bought a brinsea incubator, have been reading alot, learned how to get 95% hatch rate, and moved over my hatchery birds to make room for my two new breeds I decided to work on. Lavender and wheaten ameraucanas and ( here's why I'm on this thread) blue, splash or blue copper Marans. Could I possibly impose on you BYC ers for tips on where to buy the best birds to start my own line with? I want the very best to start with. Egg color and a good strong structure/ body size and leg feathering being my top priorities. As long as I get a good base i can work on other things as I go. Thank you so much for all your help in advance! I can't wait to start on my Marans journey.

I should have been more clear I guess about the bands.....I don't use the little tiny one for chicks, but the large plastic numbered bandettes for large fowl, I use #9's for pullets and identifying cockerels, only until a certain age....because they don't fit anymore and I generally don't grow out too many cockerels past that and if need be I have a #11 size for the big boys. Oh and I am not talking about the little spiral ones for chicks and such....I hate those. Hate them. They are horrible.

very much agreed....the hard plastic spirals suck! I do use the vet wrap you suggested...for some of my birds. believe it or not, I CANNOT keep it on the bantam wyandottes...they will not leave it alone...they pick and pick and pick until they get it off. its pretty funny to watch them tho...they will jump about and scurry around like they hope it will fall off. Pretty funny. So I use the flat rolly plastic bands for them...they work really well and last for a long while since their little legs are like toothpicks haha
