Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

How about if we listed different parts of the Marans and listed the DQs and faults for each, maybe number in sequence toward being the worst. Let me know what you would like to see in a chart. We can also include what to look for as they grow out.

Hey Christie! I don't if I got back to you yet or not, sorry. My inbox has been going crazy lately. I can't share eggs at this time because I am dealing with this carnation comb issue....until my birds are clear or clean, which may be never, or I get new stock, I would not feel right sharing anymore eggs with folks. I already feel horrible that some of my dear Marans friends got birds with the carnation combs from me when they hatched their eggs early this year.

No problemo! I know people get busy. I am trying to find eggs from states that don't get too cold. Maybe eggs will make it to me without freezing first. Lol

If I could butt in for a second as I to want to learn what to cull for as well, can we start with the head (comb, eye color, shape of) and work are way down??? I'm very interested....

Working on a list at present, and will get started on forum later today if new internet devise will work.

Is this going to go into the SOP thread or is it going to go here? If it goes here it will get lost me thinks.

This is the list I've started without any numbered importance. To me all DQ's should be culled. My thinking was to number faults in the order we would look at a bird and decide if it needed culling. Example: carnation comb would be worse than a fluff at the tail break so it would be numbered at 3 and the fluff at 8. But I will say that with my limited experience I'm in for whatever you think works the best.

DQ’S

Split comb
White Earlobes
White in the feathers....unless it is a Splash bird
Yellow legs
Feathers or stubs on any toe unless it is the outer toe
Pearl or dark eyes

Faults

Carnation combs
Twisted combs
Thumbprint comps
Sprigs
Wry tail
Crooked toes (unless the toe/s were injured after hatch and you know it)
Fused or webbed toes
Pinched tail
Squirrel tail
Narrow bodied birds
Mossiness
Split wing or Angel wing
Crooked beak or beak deformities
Fluff at the tail break
Head shape

Thanks Debbi!

I didn't mention eye color because it takes so long for them to change and I have seen dark eyed birds eyes change to the proper color, but completely forgot about the Pearl eyes, good catch sister.

My Blue Copper boy that Don suggested that I hold on to had very dark eyes....his eyes are beautiful now, I think he is going to be 8 mos. old, can't remember exactly without looking at the calendar. (feeble mind) I thought his eyes were not going to change. See what I get for thinking?

I've gotta agree with the eye color thing sometimes taking a while. I have a girl that now has a gorgeous colored eye, but took just short of a year for her eyes to fully change. After I realized that I am now sure that I culled at least two great birds that I liked everything else on, but had dark eyes, that I now wish I would have kept just to see how they turned out. Oh well, live and learn eh?

"Little grey bantam" tried to send message to you but it said your box was full .... anyway i can get in touch please let me know ?
