Need your opinion on some birds. I'm not sure if my original request threw every one off topic or what? When I checked in, you guys were chatting about "tools", "wood", Jewelry, hobbies, MEDS and then I got to a picture of a wicked-looking spurred Barnie hen from Hiatus.

So let me try again....I am looking for your guys feedback on these "Lemon Cuckoos Marans" and these birds from an old post of "Blue Birchen Marans"??

True be told, I am going to have an extra pen, since the Cuckoos I recently picked up a few months back started to lay. Hmmm, let’s just say, they laying eggs on the lighter side of light!!! Honestly, the eggs are lighter than my pink laying EE'rs….WTH!

I’m a bit bummed, because they were big, square and meaty birds….. but I guess I move on to better quality birds.

heres our marans i want a cretiqe on the hens and the roo. i know the roo has WAY to much red as hes almost solid red and he has a croocked tail(wry?) but what about the hens? we had a few cold nights just now and he got a bit of frostbite on his comb but if you could please let me know what yall think i would be much greatfull thank you. oh since this thread moves so fast can you please pm me what you think about them roo included or you can cretique under the pics on the site there

Your pics threw me off, for some reason, I didn't think they were yours, I thought you were looking to buy them, and the "Lemon" thing really threw me...
I am guessing a Golden Cuckoo?
Another thing is it sounded like Bev was in on your conversation, and there is NO WAY I am gonna comment after the QUEEN HAS SPOKEN.

If you scroll over your own photos and click on the image link, you will be able to copy and paste the image link for each picture on byc.

Blue birchen.... With all the comb issues popping up.... I would want a good pic of both sides of the that comb. The blade should not twist to side like this boy's is.
The chest view of this boy looks way narrow. It could just be the pic. I will be the first to admit that pics sometimes make things appear that aren't there and make other things disappear that are really there.

You should ask for some more photos of this boy WITHOUT folks holding him. You need to see a side view, a rear view, and a top view, plus close ups of the comb FROM BOTH SIDES!
Ask them to take a pic of the wing extended, you will want to see both wings too.

Hi Paul!

I would stay away from the "Lemon" Cuckoo, Lemon to me suggests an outcross to another breed, but that is just me.

I am very very new to Birchens so I wish I could give you advise. I will say that the comb being referred to said in the listing to have had frostbite damage, not only for the comb would I ask, but to see more of the birds themselves, I would still ask for more photos of these birds.
I agree with Math about asking for more photos at all the angles she suggested and without the birds being held.
I only remember seeing one photo of any eggs in those auctions...they looked ok but would ask for very recent photos of eggs that the birds are laying right now. Birchens right now are not known to lay as dark of an egg as their counter parts the BC. Fact, it's my thoughts that they lay similar to some of the darker laying Cuckoo's.
Sorry your Cuckoo's lay a lighter egg. Did they just start laying?

Mornin everyone...its a slow startin morning again. Not feelin all that great, my back is giving me quite the fit this week. blech

I agree with Math and Pink...ask for more photos and etc...its about the only thing that will help determine if the birds are worth working with. It is really hard to find Birchens at the quality level of some of the other colors. Its just how it is right now. I don't even want to think of how many hours of research I've done on birchen stock and etc... and sometimes...it just comes down to deciding if you can live with out them or not and if you absolutely have to have them, find the birds with the best qualities that you can, that have the least amount of faults and are things that you can work on in a breeding program. Then buckle down and be prepared for some work on your hands.

I can understand why a lot of people pass over the birchens...they really do need ALOT of work as a whole.
