Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

On second thought....you could have some sort of genetic mutation that has run rampant throughout your flock, affecting not only your chickens, but other animals as well...are any of your pigs, cattle, horses, sheep, dogs, children, or other animals shown any sign of sprouting spurs? Did you get as big of a laugh out of reading this as I did while writing it? No? Sorry...but I am easily amused...

She is pretty close to Canada, maybe she has some funky dew.... (sorry I just could not resist)

Math~ Will get that photo of white in the wing tip for you later, probably tomorrow or later if you don't have one for the list by then. It was too cold to chase the girls yesterday for a photo shoot.

Wait....didn't Randy post a white in the feather for you?

Spurs~

I have not come across hens with spurs in my Marans, but man o man I had a Welsummer hen that would have made you all gasp with the size and length of her spurs.

Speaking of spurs I really need to take care of my Bill boy and give him a trim and sand. His spurs are out of control. Maybe I will try the potato thing this time.

Hi all. I was surprised to see my auction here and am happy to hear feedback.
Sorry this "quote" of my auction caused some confusion. I am always happy and actualy enjoy talking birds and answering questions for folks who contact me.

I did have a few conversations with Bev about these birds and am trying to breed for more birchens and quality, based on her advice.

2 things I would like to clarify. My roos comb is not floppy. If you see the lower pic you will see that he had frostbite last winter and lost his rear points from that. I posted the younger picture as proof that he really did have a great comb before that.
I would have been happy to go to the coop and take current pictures had they been requested.

If you read my information on the laying hens that I have him in with you will see that they are not birchens and yes those are the eggs they lay.

I think he has filled out more this year. I will be taking some current pics as you mentioned and I appreciate knowing what views will be beneficial for folks to offer constructive help. I plan to continue to read an participate in this and other threads as you folks have more experience and great input that I always learn from. I hope this hatching season brings great things fro quality and birchens in my flock....as always they are a work in process.

look forward to seeing more pics. On the girls...are they solid blues, not from copper lines, or are they blue coppers that are over melanized? Just curious

I started with Solid blues and Splash. And some Black Coppers. The blue coppers I have now (there are 2) are second gen. I am hoping they are carrying a birchen gene.

Please keep in mind that I am very new to the genetics gene and decided I wanted to be commited to this breed and my goal was quality Blue and Black Birchen with good egg color.

If I see anything here as a misconception on my part or if you have any advise you would like to offer I consider most of us on the same team

haha...I hope my question didn't put you on guard. I raise birchens and they are a project and a half and was just curious to see what you are using. where did you source your solid blues from? I've had a devil of a time finding them, but have been able to procure birchen girls along the way, but would still like to find some solids without carnation comb issues or being really coppers that are overmelanized for use with my birchens to work on the size and etc

Just want folks to know that constructive critisism is a tool especialy if delivered respectfully. As you do

Do you have Birchen Blues or Blacks?

I will need to go back and check my records I mever remember names. My original birds I hatched from eggs I bought here on BYC 3 years ago. The person I hatched the birchen roo from did not know she had birchen in her flock.

I am thinking of purchasing some Birchen eggs if i can find some stock that will work well with mine in order to give me a leg up...as it sounds like you may have done.

i have both blacks and blues...and am making good progress with them, but still would like to see the size increase on them. I might be a bit off kilter too around here since my whole cuckoo flock, my BCM boy and my Splash boy are huge. Anything looks small next to some of them, but would love to eventually get to where my Birchens are just as nice in type and size.
I'd love to know if you can find it where you got your solids. I've tracked down people that have them only to find out they've sold out of them or have issues I dont want to introduce like carnation combs or find out they are really coppers. can get disheartening sometimes
