Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Morning!

Marans go into lockdown today!
fl.gif
It was a balmy 71* here yesterday. Had to turn the AC on in the car and the house for a few mins .

Rain today and tomorrow, but still warm. The coldest night in the next few days will be 29 but most nights are in the mid to upper 30's
ya.gif
maybe I can move those bitty babies out side.

Picked me up a bunch of chickens.... 2 are blue copper pullets. Not laying yet. Can't wait till they fill out some. They are from a July hatch. They are in that awkward teen looking thing. No funky combs
clap.gif
I will give them a good once over today. Not much feathers on the legs, but my roo can fix that
lau.gif
just hope they lay pretty dark eggs.

Good luck with your hatching!! Supposed to get up to 78 here today. It is only in the 60's now and seems gloomy still lol. I won't complain though. I'm just glad it isn't still raining. My pens are still a disaster. I cleaned out 4 of them yesterday and my back still hurts.

We needed the rain. I set up a rain barrel at my breeding pens... maybe we will get enough to keep me from lugging water to the back. I still have a couple of pens to clean but 2 is better than ALL like it was the other day. Cleaning pens gets to my back too.

Thanks. I had temp spikes yesterday up to 102, probably because of the outside temps going up. When I set the eggs it was getting in the 20's at night. So I had to raise the temp on the thermometer. I lowered it yesterday. I forgot to clean the hatcher... or turn it on
he.gif
I need to head to the farm....maybe I can get a pretty good bit done. Hubby is going through Vertigo.... never had it this bad. He is going to stay home.... maybe I will get more done....

Perhaps some might be slow to start, but when looking in them all the stuff is at the bottom of the egg and you can see the yolk just sort of slink and sludge down to the bottom of the egg. I have a very bright candler I made and I can see into almost every egg my girls give me with the exception of the dark dark ones like I got from that Blue Copper a few weeks ago. I can see in the 3 that I think are good that yolk is still suspended in the top of the egg and I can see development in them, you know like the little black blob that floats? In the 3 that appear good the yolk doesn't slide to the bottom of the egg.

hmmm...that's odd. I've never had that happen. You think they might have been scrambled somehow or just not fertile? When I have eggies that haven't been good they just kind of look exactly the same as the other eggs that are, but just no development...

By the way...I'd love to see and know how you made your candler!

It's a large Yuban coffee can. I choose the Yuban can because the inside is foil and it reflects more light and it was just sitting around.
big_smile.png
Spray painted to outside of the can with black paint after taking off the label and then couldn't stand looking at it black so I wrapped that with pink duct tape (would have used black but didn't have any
big_smile.png
) and cut a hole in the end of the can a little bigger than a quarter. Used a lid from a large folgers can because it is not as flimsy as the Yuban lid and cut out a piece of rigid stryo insulation with a hole in the center to fit into lid for light to sit into. Made an access cut for the light cord to come out of in the can. We used a basic ceramic light fixture an old metal workbox (a junction box like you would put in the ceiling to wire your light fixture to) Used a small 10 or 13 watt CFL I think, (must be a smaller CFL because the larger ones don't fit with the can back over it) The can snaps down onto the lid and I can sit it on the table and candle. If I could have done something different I would have made it sit on it's side somehow because I tend to hold it over on it's side to candle so that I don't have to turn the egg upside down.

Ugly, cheap and works great!
Totally bad photo but here it is.

Splash birds are blue...they have 2 copies of the blue gene that makes them the "splash" look, blue birds have 1 copy of the blue gene and they look blue.
This girl of yours is a Splash.

good deal. It's given me a couple of ideas to make one for here. I have just been using a smaller candler, but it doesn't work as well for the darker eggs

Yup, looks like a Splash to me!

Blue is a dilute of Black; and Splash is a dilute of Blue. Some will show copper, some never do. Depends on how much the parents had. I love Splashes!!!

I can see into everything really... except like I mentioned before about the dark dark ones, in those it atleast allows me to see if it is good or not but can't see much detail. It's so bright, in all other eggs, even the olive eggs, I can see their little heads, feet and the down that is on them. It lights up the inside of them like Clark Griswold's house at Christmas. Someday I may do something different but it works so why change it...and I really liked it price.
