Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

The $100 bill idea does work!

My step-daughter's grandmother does this with all her grandkids!
She came up with the idea after spending Christmas Eve at the casino!!

Middle toe feathering maybe a no- no, but I will breed a bird with feathers or stubs on the middle toe before I breed a bird with something like wry tail, roach back, twisted beak or my personal favorite....carnation comb, unless I am test mating for research purposes on the latter, which I am dealing with right now.

So this idea that I had floating in my head about sibling to sibling crossing to check for sprigs/carnations/comb faults was the right idea? Not that it really matters right now since mine aren't even close to laying age but this way I can start early and see what happens.

While egg color is the big goal on Marans, if someone had to pick one other feature to concentrate on, what would it be? Also, and this is strictly hypothetical, if someone had no choice but to grab another variety of chicken to breed into their Marans flock, what would be an idea variety? Say it was being done to help eliminate the comb issue. (Yes, my thought train has not only derailed but the darn thing hasn't even tanked up on coffee yet).

I would say probably the Langshan. They have a different stature and stance and they have light egg color but if you really study them they are very similar and the leg feathering would be a bonus.
I know I am going to get some flack somewhere for this answer, I know someone is sitting out there saying "Langshan?!?!?!" and thinking if only they could

I would agree with you Kim...the langshan went into the development of the Marans. Having said that...if one were hard pressed and had to cross with them...I would pick some poor looking langshans. ones with a lower tail set and longer back.

I said no no, because I forgot if it is a fault, or DQ.
But I have a boy in my lap right now, that has the middle toe feathers, and I do plan on holding onto him.
Looks like I am getting a little better with the camera
Here's Rudy.

He's the one with the rudimentary toes, you may be able to see the wonky toenail.
And it's just the lightbox reflecting off his back, no copper there, just his neck.

I dare say that this has probably already been done. I've seen quite a few Marans lately with a "wine glass" shape to them, and very full, open tails. Hmmmmm, surely not?

The male in this pic is 29" tall, but he is a baby.

Walt

My Welsummer rooster was 25" tall.....nobody believed me when I told them how tall he was.....then they would see him and

"Yep he sure is tall! " they would say.

I would always say back to them...if you think he is tall you should see a Shamo.
How old is your boy Walt? I really like him! Just something about them that steals my heart.

He is 1.5 years old. Shamo's continue to grow for 3 years.
Here is his dad mom and dad. Dad is three years old. I'll have to weigh and measure him, but the black female with him weighs 9.3 lbs if that give you a scale. I will take a picture of him next to a ruler when his tail finishes.

Great photos Stoo!!!! Keep 'em coming!

Go Rudy! He reminds me of my Lil' Bill when he was that age. I think he is going to have a nice broad chest and shoulders.
