I will CONFIRM that the white can disappear over time. My roo is around 1 3/4 years old. He has finally LOST all the WHITE in his wing feathers.
He DID NOT MOLT it out! It has slowly disappered over time. A few months ago, I posted pics of the wing feather when the white was about the size of a quarter. Now it is TOTALLY GONE! The wing feather use to be over 1/2 white a year ago.

I am not going to be well liked for this but here goes......you still need to watch that feather...Gnarles had 2 white feathers in his tail at just less than 2 years old (he did not have white in the tail before that), they turned blue again after a couple months, but just a couple 3 months ago he went into a serious molt and guess what, they came back....he was 2.5 years old.

hey Walt...how tall is that boy? I've only ever seen one in person and he was huge!!

The male in this pic is 29" tall, but he is a baby.

Walt

My Welsummer rooster was 25" tall.....nobody believed me when I told them how tall he was.....then they would see him and

"Yep he sure is tall! " they would say.

I would always say back to them...if you think he is tall you should see a Shamo.
How old is your boy Walt? I really like him! Just something about them that steals my heart.

I am sorry about the carnation comb Hens, trust me I know how that bites. On the bright side it looks to me that you may only have 2 cockerels there.

This will be an interesting group to follow as they grow. I know that the black chick is male, one of the blue ones is a male and we're not sure about one of the splash chicks. DD and I will try and get some good comb pictures of each chick along with a side shot so we can follow their development. I will leave this group in their own pen and once we grow them up, I plan to do some sibling test mating to see what the out come is and see what I can learn from it.

that's awesome! I figured that giving them a few more days would help some. The last couple of years I've forced myself to wait til after day 10 cause I'd get so anxious if I wasn't immediately seeing growth. its crazy how even 1 day can make such a difference with development. I've never tried hatching refridgerated eggs...might have to try one of these days

By the way....I am DONE christmas shopping! all in a day and a half...for me that's really good. I'm so excited! So, today will be cleaning and prepping for my brother and his wife and 4 kids to come and stay for a week with us. Its gonna be a mad house with 9 people in the house and 2 dogs and my crazy bantam BCM girlie still healing up. She's gotten increasingly more active and loves her wandering time. She does come and sit on my arm quite a bit too tho. I can't believe how well she's healing up.

I am not normally a candler.....I usually set them and forget them, but since the last hatch was Birchens and this batch is from Bill's family..I can't control myself and I have to look. Someone keep me away from the 'bator!!!!!!!!

I have been done with Christmas shopping for years.

I'm the type that does not do presents...I just want my family together and share in each others company. Of course we have a huge Christmas dinner though.

Really happy for your bantam girl....you will miss her greatly when she has to finally move back out to the chicken house.

I looked long and hard at the splash chicks and thought at first maybe the first one (green band) looked a little roo-ish, but I couldn't say for sure because the comb is not as prominant as it is on the other 2 males.

I wouldn't mind the just hanging out with family for holidays, but my dad's side of the family is who we always spend the holidays with and every single one of them express through gift giving...so we do it. The last two years I've found awesome stuff for really, really good deals. I've learned where to shop and etc so it helps.

I will miss her when she goes back to the chicken house...that's true. She's healing well, but will probably take a while longer to heal enough to be sure the boys don't just rip open her neck again. My toy aussie does well with chickens, but she is opposed to them in her space. The other night I was working downstairs in my art studio area and when she saw my bird was out running around on the floor, she jumped up on the day bed I have down there and mushed up the blankets and hid in them so all you could see was eyes and a nose. What a big baby!

I don't blame you about candling eggies that important! How are your birchens doing by the way?

**HOW** did you get that accomplished. Every year I say we are cutting back... Hubby gets the guilts (we both grow up with over the top presents)... I'm sent out to buy more... Cycle perpetuates!

It didn't help that the chicks were so wiggly and my camera battery was flashing red so not much time to shot pictures!

my side of the family we stopped exchanging gifts years ago except for the kids so we buy for nieces and nephews and everyone hangs out together. My DH's side of the family always feels like a competition to see who can out do who...... makes it less than fun. DH and I get gifts for our kids and try to be conservative with that
