Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yes! There needs to be a forum where these faults (DQs) are honestly discussed, if we are to make any major improvements in the breed! Too many people have lied directly to my questions and specific inquiries. Some, may have been ignorant to the problem; but quite a few have told me bald faced lies! Money talks, honesty walks kind of deal. And on and on it goes, until the entire gene pool of Marans in this country has been contaminated. Truthfully, I believe it already is! If you haven't had this problem yet; just wait, you will.

I believe we have the advantage knowing what they look like and I'm thanking my lucky stars I haven't had it crop out yet. I can thank Don for the culling help so now I'm excited to see what happens with my first baby girls back to their father and I'll work with whatever hatches. This is just a hobby and I've been having fun so I'll just work with what I have and keep soaking up the info from all who post on the board.

Just like Walt's Shamos, big, and baby seem to be confusing.
Just because these boys have graduated from cockerel to cock after their 1 yr birthday, doesn't mean they are grown up.
Anyone who has had a huge dog knows, it continues to grow (mature) even after it is full grown.
My problem is, I am pushing the limit on roosters as it is, I wish there was a "finishing school" I could send them to...
I have alot of juvies right now that all have potential, but it is getting a little noisy in my yard again.
I need to find someone local (NY) who wants to borrow these boys.
Is there a stud service for roosters?

I would get the colour chart from the MCCUSA since they seem to be working most closely with APA SOP stuff.

I have one that lays spotted eggs sometimes - seems to be either at the very beginning or very end of her weekly (or so) laying cycle.

I believe the more solid coloured eggs are preferred. Dark, with a satin finish, solid colour, and rounded (as opposed to pointy - torpedo type) ends for shape.

one comment on faults and breedimg. people that have gone out of there way to hatch or buy what they think is the perfect rooster and have big planes to breed daughters back to father (origonal father ) for many generations in hopes to increse egg color will never know the faults that will be passed on from generation to generation untill they do sibling to sibling test breeding because the rooster carries only one copy of the faulty gene so unless u breed daughters to brothers or brother to sister you will never know.

Okay so I candled again this morning (good thing I am not an obsessive candler or anything

) and what a difference a couple of days makes.

I have 12 good eggs, good veining, good air cells and I even saw one little bugger move. Remember the sludgy looking ones I described a couple days ago? Well...jokes on me because they are the ones that are good. I had 2 with blood rings and the others are just clear.

Did I mention that these eggs were washed and had been refridgerated for about 3 weeks?

I am sorry about the carnation comb Hens, trust me I know how that bites. On the bright side it looks to me that you may only have 2 cockerels there.

Good on you for culling the carnations as soon as you saw them and I too hope this garbage steers clear of your birds.

that's awesome! I figured that giving them a few more days would help some. The last couple of years I've forced myself to wait til after day 10 cause I'd get so anxious if I wasn't immediately seeing growth. its crazy how even 1 day can make such a difference with development. I've never tried hatching refridgerated eggs...might have to try one of these days

By the way....I am DONE christmas shopping! all in a day and a half...for me that's really good. I'm so excited! So, today will be cleaning and prepping for my brother and his wife and 4 kids to come and stay for a week with us. Its gonna be a mad house with 9 people in the house and 2 dogs and my crazy bantam BCM girlie still healing up. She's gotten increasingly more active and loves her wandering time. She does come and sit on my arm quite a bit too tho. I can't believe how well she's healing up.
