Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I just bought 6 purebred cuckoo maran chicks from another well known local breeder and 2-3 have rose combs. They are two weeks old and look purebred, does this ever happen with purebred maran's?

no..they should have single combs only. The only way a marans would have a rosecomb is if indeed they are not purebred. Do you know if they raised any other breeds in barred or cuckoo pattern that might have possibly been grabbed instead of the cuckoos? Maybe this is a better question...do you possibly have any pics you could post for us? There are some sharp genetics gurus that come on here and might be able to give you some more technical insight

Oh...and welcome to the forum!

ok sounds good. That's too bad he didn't have another breed that might have gotten slipped in. That would have solved the problem much smoother than thinking of the alternative. I'll keep an eye out for the photos and hopefully others will come along as well soon

So my best friend calls me like 30 minutes ago and tells me that she has a pip in her eggs that are due on Sunday.

So I says to her, "NO WAY!" "You know I could have swore I heard chirping coming from my 'bator this morning!" "OooO...Sh-tuff!"

She says, "Yes WAY! Go look at your eggs!"

I shared my eggs that I got for the NYD hatch with her, remember? Then remember I said I thought they would go early?
So I'm freakin out on the way into my office to look in the 'bator, I get there and find this.................WARNING!! WARNING!! THIS IS PRETTY NASTY, so the weak of stomach should probably just not look.

Well you all know me and I had to open the egg, but first I removed the nasty oozy stuff and sure enough...this chick had pipped and appears to be a fully developed chick. Anyone ever had a chick pip and then.....ummmm, explode?

And no I won't show photo's of the open egg and chick, I thought this picture was gross enough.

EEEEEEEeeeewwwwwwwWWWWWWWeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEE!!!!!

Needless to say.....I put the other 11 eggs in lockdown.
