I hope to. I leave for work in a while to help with the truck. I haven't found my usb memory card adaptor for my computer yet. I KNOW I packed it up and out of the way for when my brother's family was here and I can't find it anywhere now. SO, even tho I can take some pics I can't load them til I find it...its driving me nuts too. I looked all over last night and nada.

I should add I took some pics of Gigantor monday and have a couple of nice ones of him and some of the girls with him, so its doubly annoying me that I can't load them!

Anyone and everyone with the carnation comb issue.....................

A gentleman from New Zealand commented on the carnation comb issue post over @ The Coop, he stated he has the carnation issue in his Barnevelders and that from his crossings he has found that it is autosomal recessive - meaning that it takes 2 copies of the gene to present the trait or disorder.

Not all offspring will be effected...genes come in 2's or pairs, if it is recessive, both genes in the pair must be positive (defective) for the abnormality to express, chicks with only one gene that is defective will be carriers and they can pass this gene to their offspring.

Parent A - has 1 copy of the gene
Parent B - has 1 copy of the gene..............there is a 1 in 4 chance that they will produce offspring that will be effected by the trait or disorder. 50% (1 in 2) chance of inheriting 1 copy of the defective gene and becoming a carrier.

The parents each have 1 copy, but do not show the defect and those parent hatch out 4 chicks,

1 chick is hatched with 2 normal genes.
2 chicks are hatched with one normal gene and one defective gene and are carriers.
1 chick is hatched with the 2 defective genes and expresses the pretty carnation comb.

Yesterday the OP asked about Rosecombs in Marans because they have 2 or 3 chicks with Rosecombs......the seller the OP purchased these chicks from had both Cuckoo's and RIR's. It's my guess someone may have jumped the fence and visited with their neighbors and that is also where you get the reddish cast in the chick down.

well...that is mighty interesting! So, it is possible to still get birds that won't carry it then? If so...how would one know for sure? Just through test mating? I've also seen issues with birds from the coronation sussex that have the coronation comb...and always wondered where it came from.

Morning all!
Was out checking out my birds today in the 8 degrees sunshine!

Couple questions - couldn't take a pic b/c camera doesn't work in 8 degrees weather....

I need more thickness/size in my Marans and I have a young boy growing up and he appears to have some size to him, coloring appears good if on the darker side, but I have some questions about him:

1. Would you use a roo, whose tail you haven't seen?
He came to me tailless and seems to be only going to have 1 tail feather... (he is NOT rumpless - just was picked terribly and tail seems to not have recovered)

Would you dare use a roo, whose tail you haven't seen?
Will he get a second chance on a tail for his first adult molt?

2. Same boy appears to have a decent comb - good shape, and number of points, no twists, no sprigs, etc.
BUT - it is huge (as in length from points to top of head)...

Would that be heritable?
I read somewhere that hot weather chicks grow bigger combs than cold weather chicks - is that true?

Would you consider that a reason to cull?

I'll try to get a pic later, if/when it warms up a bit
