Nifty idea! I can't use something like that in my bator, not enough room. Need to get a Sportsman or make one of my own. Do you put a lid on them, or are they high enough that the chicks don't jump over them??

That's just too cool. You could probably do all the sides with small zipties as well (yay my favorite thing zipties lol). I have a bunch of those cross stitch thingys but they are colored, I got them years ago for use in scrapbooking project that I ended up not doing but saved them anyways lol.

So I got my SOP book the other day.....I have been busy reading it and familiarizing myself with the updates.....quite a few by the looks of it & going off feeble memories of my old book. Sure is nice to have clean pages without smeared pooh marks on it and blurred out print because trying to wash or wipe the pooh from the page does not work so well for the paper, but sometimes it helps to have the book by the chicken for comparisons.

Anyway....I cannot find any where that it states that fluff (talking of fluff at the tail break) is a defect, fault or DQ.
Infact, I can only find where it states that "underfluff may show through at junction of back and tail, shoulders, wingbows, etc."

It also states that "it should be considered but not granted undue emphasis in tight feathered breeds (ex. Malays, Aseels, Shamos, Games, etc.)"

Am I reading and understanding correctly that fluff necessarily isn't as big of a deal as perhaps it is viewed as?

If it is given thought and consideration by judges and birds might be marked down for it......is there a specific number of points cited for it? Does it fall under body and underfluff in the general scale of points?

Thoughts from everyone appreciated....and if Walt is running around here and happens to read this I would love his thoughts too!!!!

I just use the metal mesh lid that comes with the hatching tray.. I just make the dividers tall enough to reach the lid and they don't move, it works well for me.

yeah...I did a few with zipties and took the zipties off after I realized that they didn't lay flat and kept the dividers from sitting flush, it made me crazy haha. Yes...I am a NERD!

ya know what...just had another thought, you could make the dividers even more useful if they are colored since you could color code your hatches...

Interesting! I myself, find it detracts from the overall picture and the symetry of the bird. If I were a judge,

, I would take points off for it, but that's just me. I think where the real problem might lie, is if the fluff was of the wrong color. Like white fluff on a blue or black bird?? The more I look at other breeds of chickens, it seems to be quite a common sight.

Mine didn't come with a lid for the hatching tray as I purchased it used and I haven't got around to making one for it, I did fabricate a makeshift fence out of some hardware cloth that goes all the way in the back because the little buggers like to go over the back of the tray and my arms just aren't long enough to reach all the way back there, which made for getting them out fun.

Thanks! I'm a bit nervous with these 4 eggs, as I had to move them to the LG bator to hatch. We all know how dependable they can be!

to be quite honest....its something I've always culled for when I've had the luxury to, because I don't enjoy how it looks, but never really had it brought up as such a point of importance until I joined this thread. I've seen birds shown and do quite well with it, but that's probably more a individual judges preference or etc?
