Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Some BCM hens do display too much copper in places it shouldn't be. Usually, the ones with too much red lay the darkest eggs. I don't have enough copper in my girls, so I've not had the problem. Another reason she may have sold her in the first place was her poor egg color. If the color isn't at least a 4 on the Marans egg color chart, they can't really be called a Marans.

I bought her when she was about 16 weeks old, so she wasn't laying yet. I'm keeping her regardless, i was just curious and thought I would ask the experts. She's sitting on a clutch of EE eggs for me right now. She should be a surrogate Momma of 4 on the 20th

Hi Jan! It's almost impossible for me to do this with chicks that I have not hatched and had in my hot little hands for a few days.

How old are these chicks? Also, can you repost just 2 photos of each chick? 1 shot from the side and one shot of the wing outstretched?

Oh, I'm NO expert by any sense of the word!

She's still a pretty bird, will give you eggs, and hopefully she'll be a good mama for your EEs! We here are all still learning about this breed, so pull up a chair and join in the fun!

Hahahaha, ok. I got her to add to the color of my eggs. So far, I get white, cream, tan, 4 shades of brown, 2 shades of blue, green, and when my banty isn't broody, pink.

I bought them as hatching eggs, they were sold as blue coppers. I did get only blue, black, and splash from the eggs. So seems like the seller was truthful.
Here's those 2 pullets:

Here's the cockerel. He was sick when this photo was taken, so he's not looking that good (very pale comb). I ended up culling him. He had a huge mass (tumor?) inside him

I'll take some more pics of the little cockerel and post later. Thanks for helping

I'm going to take a stab at this. He looks like, from the pics of his wings, like he may have some Wheaten in him? He also does have too much red in the breast, which may or may not diminish with age; but in his case probably not. Someone else will chime in here I'll bet!

I need to trot over to Amish ville. Somehow, in the night, I slept on my right shoulder wrong, and it feels like I dislocated it! It is one sore puppy this morning. I did dislocate this shoulder years ago, so I'm hoping it's just showing it's arse with aches, instead of being dislocated again. MAN, that hurt like crazy!!

eek! I hope that it is just upset with you that you slept wrong and nothing more serious. Hopefully it will work out the kinks while you are going about your day!
