Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

bluesguy: I think it just depends more on the individual birds now than the lines. So many lines have been mixed up since they came from the originators that who can really say what they are any more. That being said, seems like many of my darkest layers supposedly came from wade x presley.

Ruth: I'm totally jealous of all the wild horses you got to adopt. Do you have any photos posted anywhere?

If you are looking for the ones that lay the darkest eggs you will need to do some research before buying . I will send you a name or two to get you started , don't settle for just any BCM .

I was wondering what color egg also. they came from a olive colored egg. what color do wyandottes lay? maybe it will be an even darker color olive egg.

Normally, I would tell you that the chicks that have a peacomb will lay an olive egg, but since the Rosecomb has been mixed in from the use of the SLW ...it will be a wait and see game as to what color they lay. Will also add...if any of them lay a green or olive egg it should not be darker than the egg they came from (chances are since the SLW was mixed in and they lay a light tan egg, the egg color will lighten).....the only way they could be darker is if this was a second generation cross back to a Marans or an Olive egger and even crossing back to an Olive Egger is not a guarantee that the olive color will darken, but it should atleast maintain.

Debbi - My Toyota is still going strong at 200,000+ miles, so there's hope!
Just had to replace the front pumpkin and it sounds like a belt may need tightening with the changes, but going great!!
Love my Toyota pickup!!

Vicki- sitting on the sofa with hot chocolate after tromping through 8" of snow for chores this AM
- I'll get my butt in gear and get some pics!!

Need help with a strategy for banding.
I already have right leg, both legs, and left legs marked on the pullets....

I need to get numbered bands....

The outside box is bent a little on one corner, but the inside is intact and all eggs look good. I did not unpack them, I will tomorrow at the farm.

I found the thermostat I am going to put in the hatcher but I will have to wait till it is shipped. I got another WHT and boy is that cycling fast but it is holding at 99-100 without any variance and I didn't have to adjust it at all. Since it is cycling so fast I will put fresh bulbs in every hatch until I get the new one.

Yes pics will be required.
