Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Can anyone reccomend a good egg candler for use with maran eggs? Mine is just not cutting it with the maran eggs. I'm using a 90 lume LED flashlight and it doesn't do a darn thing. lol

Brinsea makes a candler which will work with the darkest Marans eggs. I think they are having a sale this month. Don't know if it is on the candler.
Best,
Karen

I use 120 lumens and I can see veins and then just black. I have a 400 lumens ordered and I will let everyone know if that works.

yes, please show Velcro....please please.....pretty please. I love these ideas....Pipe cleaners are easy. I know what you mean about those zip ties- the little birds grow so fast and dang it if you miss one! I had one Mandarin duck who I missed and by the time I noticed it, that zip tie was SO tight around his leg it had indented it. Poor guy. He's ok, but it was SO hard to cut off without hurting him! So I'll separate the incubator with some sort of basket or craft fabric (to keep the BBS Maran chicks separated from the BCM chicks), and use vet wrap or pipe cleaners (or velcro) on any chicks who hatch before putting into the brooder box.
Thanks so much! I love BYC- there's always someone to help!

Charging batteries so I will get some pics when I get to the farm tomorrow. They are really easy.

shot ya an email back Debbi!

He's a nice looking boy too. So I'm guessing there's no one defined "look" for a splash copper. Are any of the Marans clubs working on a SOP for them? As I said, I've really been out of the loop and haven't talked or read about chickens all year.

Monique~
There is no uniform or one defined look for Splash because of the diluting effect of the 2 blue genes, it will allow random leakage of blue and copper flecks throughout the males and random blue feathers on the females and if one is lucky, some copper also. The random leaking blue feathers will never take on a pattern so their is no replicating it in the next generation, thus, a SOP would be pretty hard to hash out and determine I would think.

Ahhh - that makes sense. Thanks again Pink. I've just never paid much attention to Splash at all, in any breed. I'm getting some splash orpingtons now and before that I never had splash anything.
