Yes, they are pretty chunky, especially the Splash and that really light blue, which I called a cockerel yesterday but today on day 3.5, my final answer is pullet and I might just keep that one.

I think I got a spilt of 6 pullets and 6 cockerels this batch. They are extremely friendly butterballs.
Edited to Add: If Washington State wasn't so cost prohibitive to become NPIP cert., I could ship them out. DARN!!!!!!!!! It is just beyond me why this state has to be the most expensive for NPIP.

I'm hoping mine will turn out as well...!! I'm just about beside myself and still have 16 more days to go

LOL, I said, I might keep one...and we both know that we can't just keep one lonely chick...so I may have to keep 2 of them....BUT THAT'S IT, NO MORE THAN 2 I SAY!!!!

I hope you have a great hatch Vicki and that 16 days will fly by girl!

Hey did you get my PM with the photo of the finished doors?

Blarney-- I have cages all over. At least it feels that way. As they out grew totes, I unearthed old dog crates and stacked them. ANd found a large box, had DH cut it in half and duct taped it together . ANd in a few short weeks, they have all outgrown these set ups.

Hoping for another nice day, now that I have the saw!!

Oh and you asked how I get them to stand so still........I don't, I set the camera to take about 20 multiple photos at a time when photo'ing chicks. I can pick the best photo out of all of them, so that way they can move around all they want and I know I am atleast guaranteed one good photo.

Hello all, I have been reading this thread for a few days trying to learn all I can. We are fairly new to chickens. We started our flock last summer with 10 cuckoo maran chicks. We ended up with 6 hens and 4 roosters. We lost half of both to a dog getting in the coop yard. But now our girls are laying our boys are very interested in them (we have them in a seperate pen for now). We had planned on just adding some buff orphingtons and some black australorps to the mix and calling it good. That was until I went to an auction last weekend. Then my hubby knew we were in trouble, lol. We bought a pair of blue splash marans with feather feet. They are my favorites. then we got a trio of Golden Salmon Marans that are just beautiful. Now even hubby is looking at all the different marans out there thinking where we could add pens, lol. My golden salmon girls are already laying eggs, I figured with the move they made and the night at the auction they might take a while to start laying. But nope we have been getting at least one egg a day from the two of them.

Now my question, has anyone had any luck letting a broody hen hatch marans? We are waiting for our first hen to go boody but I don't want to try to hatch my maran eggs that way if it would be better to find someone with an incubator to hatch them.

Thanks,
Cathie
