Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

whenever you are ready you can put your guy in with the girls...just don't collect any eggs for setting til after the window of time passes. That's what I usually do.

x2 That way they are fertile when you collect. Those girls are picky and my not take to him right away and they may take their time getting fertile.

Definitely, a possible way to manage the situation. I kind of like the idea of checking the eggs after about 2 weeks to see if the semen is still viable. ANd then check every 2-3 days if necessary. THis breeding business is much harder than I thought it would be. I realized I need to put the girls under lights to be sure they are laying soon.

Morning all! For those of you that I was chatting with several days ago about my silver boy Regulator, I heard back from Peter Butler in the UK! He didn't have time to go into too much detail but is working to establish a standard there for the Silvers and will be keeping me updated on the breed variety as he is "absolutely fascinated" by what I have here! I can't wait til he emails me back when he has more time! Sounds like I might have something indeed! Maybe I'm not crazy!

Wow Vicki, he is different! Someone supposedly had Silver Wheatens on the MCCU group and posted pics to the album, I think? What breeding did this guy come from?? I'm sure not seeing Wheaten in the mix, or is it just me?

I will indeed! I need to shoot a reply back to him when I get home from work. It'll be nice to be in the loop on the standard they are developing and on the genetics conversations. I am SOOO glad that I listened to my gut and kept him...now to see what I can do to produce some more out of the crosses. I have 5 birds at the top of my list for test mating!

There was a correction posted on the MCCU group that someone had misspoke about the Silver Wheatens....I looked through the albums on there but didn't find them. Now that I have internet back again I might have to see if I can go back and look again later when I get off work. This boy came out of my cuckoo Claude and one of my birchen girls. I have a couple of sports in with the birchens I kept because they were stunning to me and its possible that they might also be the hen used. I don't see wheaten either...

I have some ideas about what direction I'll go with breeding this year, but am trying to be patient. Some of my girls went through a really late molt and are just getting done, so hopefully I'll get eggs before too long. In particular I have a cuckoo hen that throws silver chicks...I always kind of just passed it off that she really was a blue, but looked black, but I'm really starting to wonder now. I think i will put her in with Regulator to start and see what happens with the offspring.
