Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Donna~ I did see that! THAT'S AWESOME!!!! Congrats!

Vicki~ The Barnie eggs are pure Barnie's this time. However, 2 of my youngest pullets will be going in with the new roo and the 2 BLRW girls, the BLRW's have been in with Lil' Bill taking up some empty coop space as the Barnie pen was getting a little crowded.

Speaking of Lil' Bill......I am soooo in love with this bird! I really really love his copper.

By the way....no bad combs on any of his male offspring that are old enough to show signs if they had it. The one and only male chick to hatch out of him and an pullet produced from Gnarles and Black Copper from Florida...had a clean comb. Both pullets from the same hatch and same cross are also showing good combs but they are still young, I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Arielle~ Thank You and absolutely we can use LB for counting points. Let's use this photo instead since the sun is back lighting his comb providing a great side shot illuminating every point.

All points starting from the front of the comb back to the blade are counted as a point. Nothing on the blade counts as points.

I don't particularly care for the shape of his blade but I prefer working with this vs. the carnation.

Hi,
I neeed some help. I was told thta Calf Manna was real good for poultry. So I went out and bought some.
It's a 10 lb. bag of Calf Manna by Manna Pro. Poultry is listed on the front as one species for which it is useful.
Did I buy the right thing? Or was I supposed to get Manna Pro Poultry Conditioner in the 5 lb. bag?
If Calf Manna is right, how do I use it? How much per bird? Will they choke on it? Do I need to feed grit if they
are also getting commercial layer ration from Southern States? It says 1 tablespoon a day. How do I make
sure each bird gets 1 tablespoon. I don't usually use commerical supplements except Poultry Nutri-Drops
( not using them now). It's been a long winter and the girls started to lay in Jan. So thinking this extra will
help them sail thru the breeding season.
Thanks for the help!
Best,
karen

I use calf manna...I don't buy anything special....just the plain old general calf manna, so you are just fine. I don't break it up, they do fine with it, with bantams I will kind of break some of the bigger pieces, gently with a hammer, but for the most part they do great with it. I don't give grit to my birds only because I end up getting calcium deposits onto the shells....so can't help ya too much. When I use the calf manna I'm usually using it in relation to conditioning and spurring laying, so I just hand feed it for treats and they eat it up!!
