Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Just set my first BCM eggs for the spring. The girls have been laying so well all winter I just could not hold back any longer.

Hi Everyone!

Hope everyone is doing great!

Been busy around here lately.....got rid of lots of extra cockerels yesterday and now only need to rehome 5 youngins that are all 6 weeks or younger. Feels good not to have sooo many cockerels running around. Also got rid of the last carnation combed cockerel, the Birchen who only showed a sprig on one side.....well at 3 mos. old the sprig on the other side of the blade finally came out, giving him the full effect. I skipped all around the yard yesterday afternoon knowing that as I looked through my coops that I didn't have to look at any carnations. The 3 Birchen pullets that I have are all showing nice combs so far. One of the girls is getting silver in and 1 is Goldie Locks and the other has a nice copper feather in her hackles but the rest of the hackle is black. I also kept back one of the Birchen cockerels that is also starting to turn silver in the hackle and has the street sweeper shank feathering and happened to be the nicest built male out of the bunch. Will be interesting to watch these 4 finish growing out.

Separated out my Blue Laced Red's yesterday so the wait for eggies from the girls is on. Who knew I would fall head over heels for the BLR Wy's?

I love spring cleaning! DH and I spent last weekend going from one end of the house to the other inside....I love when DH gets on his mop and vacuum cleaner kicks. Now if only I could convince him to help out in the coops with such ambition and vigor....but alas...the coops are all mine. DH does not do coops or windows.

I adore them! Love their look...their attitudes...their wide poofy Blue and Splash big butts running around. They are great layers and get along wtih every other breed here. Was toying with the idea of making some mutts for the layer flock with them using one of my Marans roos. I bet they would be tanks.

I recommend the cross. I don't have any right now as I sold them to a friend that was desperate for some layers after losing some of her birds to a predator, but they are wide and tanky and super sweet. It was hard to sell them, but I knew she would take really good care of them for me! The bonus is that they lay thicker shelled eggs, with the consistency of the wyandottes...and a range of color tones.
I plan on working on making some crosses again when I have most of my hatching season behind me. That reminds me....6 days til hatching!!

remind me to get a couple pics of some of my wyandotte l.f. running around for you. I have two SLW roos that are just phenomenal...different in their own right, but think that they will lend really well with my breeding program. I'm gonna be looking into some more stock in some specific colors as I have a few gaps to fill, but can't wait!

On top of the excellent layers they would be, I bet the cockerels are huge and would make excellent roasters, don't they? I can just see some of those chunky monkeys now.

6 days for you and 5 days until lockdown here!

Wonder what's going on at Donna's????

Very sad to read of Barb's eggies! What a bummer!
