Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Case in point is the White roo above! He is very lacking in body, has white lobes, and don't ya just love that squirrel tail?? Sheesh, I wonder, did he also win BV?? So now someone will think they have an "APA show quality bird" and will sell the eggs and chicks as such...and on it goes. This type of juding does nothing for the breed's future.

Is it just me, or is anyone else losing some messages in their PM boxes?? I have one whole thread of PMs gone, from both my inbox and my sent folder, and I know I didn't delete it! What's up with that???

Drawing blood at a horse show is perhaps just slightly different than a questionable comb or earlobes. A lopped comb is DQ'd in a single combed male when it is "lopped below the horizontal plane of the point where the bend occurs". Perhaps the judge felt the comb didn't meet this mark. Clearly, the judge at Newnan wasn't afraid to DQ birds when he/she felt it was merited.

My point was NOT that anybody who takes the trouble to prepare for and go to the show should place just for showing up but rather those of us NOT going to all that trouble perhaps shouldn't be so quick to criticize so harshly when we haven't done the same and are only judging a photograph from the comfort of our chair. No one denies the Marans breed still has a long way to go - including those that ARE getting their birds out there and getting us on the map.

Folks don't necessarily suddenly think their birds are perfect just because they placed at a show. (Although some folks seem to think their birds are perfect even if they don't place at a show!) It was simply the best that was available on the day. The situation will no doubt improve when those of you with your flawless Marans get out there and start raising the bar.

I understand that you might be upset, but I do show my birds here when I can make it to shows and guarantee I am much harsher on my own birds that anyone else's. This does not mean that I feel that I have perfect or flawless birds in the slightest. Whether or not I can make it to a certain show or not has no bearing on whether I should or should not say something. Nor does it mean that I can't appreciate the work others are doing. I can also guarantee that most of us are not just sitting in our chairs doing nothing as it has been presented.

So true! Gawd knows I've got the numbers, but until I have something WORTHY of representing the breed as it SHOULD LOOK, I will be content sitting in my chair and learning more. When I do finally get some nice birds, I will bathe them, cage them, file nails and beaks, and tote their arses to a show!

I put two paper towels on top of the wire floors and put the eggs on the towels. They don't cover the entire wire surface but they sure make it easier to clean up. The only time I have problems with chicks getting dried is if some have piped and I open the incubator to remove chicks already hatched.

Up your humidity QUICKLY when you do that... have a cup of steaming hot water ready to put in the bator, some people use a vaporizer and pipe it in.

I promised pics of birchens and I don't seem to be able to find them... I seem only have Silver Salmons saved in my photobucket...

So, either I have more pics to upload or they were next when the camera died

There were a couple of white marans... incase you are interested....

Met a lady in the parking lot while the 3 year old was melting down (she had 6 kids) anyway she had a White Marans Roo she was going to show, but he got bloodied in the ride from OHIO! So She didn't show him. He was in her arms the whole time so I can't comment on his looks really. I didn't see anything really bad. She showed some Wheatens, Black Coppers and maybe the birchens... I can't remember.

They are pretty.

Hey Donna...I haven't gone back over and posted on those SLW yet..I do think that they are non hatchery stock tho, which is always a huge bonus for me. It does make me curious to see how the birds were judged tho.

I've also decided that my chicks are out of control with how fast they are growing, Some of them have legs thicker than a writing pencil, so I will be switching bands today, about 2 weeks early. I'll see if I can get some update shots as well of some of my birds today. I have some deciding to do on who is going to be paired with who for breeding season.

I appreciate the photos you uploaded Math Ace, the good the bad the ugly..no matter. I know how much trouble it is trying to get those birds in a cage to pose just right and getting in through the crowds to even get a shot. Then you have to go through them and upload them all LOL. Not fun! I am happy you are posting them for us.

Remember folks, Lisa is just the messenger..don't shoot her for the bad birds! ROTFL!!! Last year after the BCM qualifying meet in Newnan a lot of people emailed and pm'd me asking me why such and such bird won with such obvious faults etc. Some people were even kinda nasty to me...I'm like, "How would I know? I just took and posted the pics!"

haha...no shooting at Lisa from me at all... I appreciate that she took photos! That's pretty funny tho that people were demanding explanation about why some bird placed the way they did from you for posting pics. I never would have thought it.

How's the birchen plans going Lenette? Gonna start hatching from them soon?
