So - what is spiral breeding?

Don - for someone starting out with a variety of birds, this year being my F1, is it still possible to make adequate progress, as long as I line breed thereafter?

Does this then suggest we should cull down to our best two pairs and start from there?

that's right! I don't think you would go too wrong with what i've seen to keep him and the one boy I like a lot that I'll email you about...and then there are two others you could probably pick from to keep as a backup, but none of the others so far have really popped out at me.

So if you had a group of chicks from the same hatch and a couple of the cockerels had comb issues- 1 with caranation comb of some form and 1 with a wave in the beginning of the comb both of which would be culled, would you still take a chance and mate the ones left together, which would be 2 pair and see what develops?

The guy was on the SAME SIDE of the road as the tent with the auction /sale birds in it.

Personally, I would give it a try. But if these are the birds I'm thinking they are, they may all be carriers. Guess you'll never know that until you test breed them. I've got one big beefy gal with a decent comb from that breeder that I am going to pair up with one of my boys. Let me know what you get if you do decide to breed them!

I wouldn't...for me I would get rid of the carnation right away and work with just the one if that is all I had at all, then cull really hard in their offspring and then set up a line breeding program from only the best ones if I had no other options.
And like Debbi said ( must have been writing at the same time) its possible all of them are carriers for the carnation, but that should become really obvious in the next generation if so

Vicki, maybe I misunderstood Hen's question? I didn't think she meant breeding the ones with the carnation or the wave? Hen's did you mean breeding the other siblings that had normal combs, or am I way off here? I sure would not breed anything expressing a carnation...OOOOOOOoooooooo NOOOOOOooooo!

I tried the MCCUSA directory and the MOA directory and didn't see him,do you know if he perhaps goes by a farm name as well? some are listed as farm names....?
