Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Ok good, I will wait till they have been laying for a couple months and eggs are a medium.
Yay! I can make olive eggers with my one BCM pullet while I am waiting for the rest of my marans chicks to grow up.

And to beat the leg feather subject some more.....
Hi Don

OK so it really is not related to anything, but....
My favorite Shamo pullet, Ninja, was looking a little off a few weeks ago, I was thinking she was an internal layer.
Her butt was dragging on the ground, she seemed a little depressed....
So I made an appointment to see the vet.
The morning we were supposed to go, she was in the nest box, I gave her a few minutes, went back outside, still in the nest box.
So I sat with her just to see what would happen, and she laid an egg in my hand!
Of course, this is a special egg, so I marked it and put it in the bator.
The little bugger hatched out a few days ago, and I didn't notice at first, but it seems that Clyde is the daddy.
The chick has feathered legs!

Maybe I can start the new breed...Shamo street sweeper!

Kids get pregnant at 15, and the babies are fine...
I wouldn't sell the eggs as hatching eggs, because there are so many things that just aren't perfect with them.
The shape is off, the size is off, the pullet just isn't up to speed on the egg thing.
If you count on them to hatch, you may be disappointed, but there is no reason not to try.
It's just a rookie thing

"unless you are counting on them to hatch..." I don't understand.

ok I gotchya... For me to play around in my backyard is fine but not for any kind of serious production, etc. Thanks!

While we're talking hatching I would like to ask something, please. I'm in the process of building my incubator/hatcher. I have a commercial stainless refrigerator/freezer that I'm using and I'm figuring I need to see inside the hatcher part of it. Is there any reason to a cut viewing hole in the incubator since there's not much to see? Also, I see the Sportsman has the egg racks at an angle, but others are flat. I'm assuming the angle is better, but why?
