Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hatch update! Today is day 21, we have 1 chick out, looks blue and there are 8 more eggs with varies size pips in them. Total of 13 eggs made it off the turner out of 16 set so we' ll see what we get hatched :D

Currently we have 4 babies out, 5 eggs working on getting out and 4 eggs I can't see if anything is happening!

We raise all our guys on a bucket, which is a bit labor intensive for the first several months...
They learn really easily to drink from a pail, rather than fooling around with a bottle (and getting knocked down!)

The ones born to OUR cows are raised by their own mommas, but MUCH harder to handle b/c they get so wild living out on 300 acres....

A friend who has a fancy B&B turned us on to the Piedmontesse - they're an Italian cow and, apparently, their meat is more lean than a lot of chicken!
We raise a lot of his youngstock and calf out his cows for him (I'm the midwife at the farm!)

Glad there's another Pied lover around.

Hi Everyone, So glad there is a page for the Marans . This beautiful sweet bird was sold to me as a Copper Maran. Can anyone please tell me if you think my bird is a Hen

From what I know about the Marans and from observing the ones we hatched by 16 weeks old the cockerals should have bigger combs and wattles.

Assuming you mean the bird in front and not the one with yellow legs, it does look like it could be a Black Copper Marans pullet, however, the legs appear to be "clean" (no feathers) which eliminates the French part. (The Standard in North America also calls for feathered legs.)

Hey Slick!
We've been into them for @3yrs now - great stock....easy to deal with!
Good eating, too!!

Hmm - now that I think of it, our friend got a new bull last summer from Texas!
Send any stock north lately?
