Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

My first homebred BCM chick from my lone BCM Roo and Hen, so excited :) This is one of two that hatched from 3 eggs set (6 more on lockdown Mon.) Could not find the othey tyke among my Olive Eggers, and Easter Eggers and the hiding under their ecoglo! Had a 16 hour power outage 4 days before lockdown but got temps stable after 6 hours with a car battery. Was not hopefull for the hatch but 20 out of 21 eggs hatched happy, healthy chicks!!!

You had angels on your side Zanna. So glad to hear of your fine hatch!!!

Got some pics of Randy's eggs taken, but evidently, Windows is downloading something right now, and this puter is running slower than usual. I'll see if I can't post them in the morning. Nice color, and big eggs! Will set them in the morning.

Thanks! Are you getting storms up there??

Its been strange weather all day...no outright storms, but the humidity and air pressure was so high I was having a hard time breathing and my truck along with a few others I saw on the side of the road were overheated. So, my trucks sitting in the shop and I'll find out tomorrow what's going on. We were in a tornado watch for most of this evening, but just took us off about a half hour ago since the storm's moving so fast.

I did get started on gardening after I found my way home today and have some of the most amazing onion starts from an experiment I did last fall....so I'm thrilled!

I want to share something. Remember when I was complaining that my breeding pens were getting water logged every rain? Several months ago, when the rains started, my Blue Copper from Pinkchick got sick... odd symptoms, I didn't know what was the matter. I treated him for worms, gave antibiotics and heat lamps and pretty soon he was better. He is fine now, he was just dethrowned by his blue brother.

Any who a week or 2 ago my Black Copper Roo started doing the same thing. He was moved to the same pen the other roo was in. I took him out and he was much worse for some reason. I didn't think Erik was going to make it. I wormed him, antibiotics, I had to force feed and water him. Finally I remembered reading about Oxine and vaporizing him to help. So I did that and he got better the next day and started drinking on his own.

I now know what the problem was.... MOLD! It was killing them. The biggest fix was the Oxine. I gave some yoguart and ACV in his water and he was better in 2 days from death bed. The one thing you don't want to do is give them sugar! The sugar grows the mold in their body. Just wanted to let y'all know in case you have a wired sick chicken. That was the first I had heard of mold killing chickens. Needless to say 4 gal of Oxine arrived today and I am going to spray all the coops down with Oxine. They can get it in their food, water, or air. Just keep that in your mind if you have wet coops.

Here is a link and they have all kinds of good info here for general chicken health
