Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Flgarden~Thanks.
I have set the really round eggs and they hatch out just fine. Figuring out the end that goes up is the fun part. I candle before putting them in if they are really round and try looking for the air cell...if I can't see it, I put them in the 'bator and candle them in a few days, the air cell should show after a few days of cooking. If I have them upside down, I flip them and forget them. :)

Anyone heard from Debbi about those Wheatie eggs?????? And I read that someone else was hatching out some eggs from Ms. Wynette right now...wonder how those are going?

No, haven't heard back from Debbi yet, hoping to hear ASAP!

gonna try for a few more pics of juvenile birds today....its raining off and on, so I'll have to dodge out between the downpours. I loaded the pics I took the other day and they were crap! all blurry and big poofs of windblown feathers. I'll keep trying kim...I'm really starting to love the way those birchen girls I got from KS are starting to look...coloring up a bit more, but they easily have doubled size since I brought them home!

I have some marans. The roo attacks me and i am not sure if that is usuall. I will be walking more than 20 feet away from him and he comes after me.

I retained three out of my group and two are real gentleman. The other started in on me and after using him as a football, then holding him down a couple of times I picked up a piece of PVC pipe. After a few of times of battling it he has finally gained some respect. Good luck with yours.

I nice swift kick always helps. If you don't do that, you may have to confine him somehow. You could stand your ground every time and Chase him too. Sometimes that works. Hopefully you get gentler young roosters out of this year's hatches.

Also meant to say what a beautiful baby in your avatar! Akita, yes? Beautiful!!!!!!! About 15 years ago I had 3 Akita's, a pure black and 2 that were colored just like yours, Mr. Dink, Gus and Sveve ( pronounced Svay-va....Swahili for black night if I remember correctly and please don't mind my spelling this morning ;)) ....loved them to pieces, but my ex-husband got them when we divorced.

We are looking forward to 2 days of lovely sunshine so I will be headed out to the garden today to see what kind of trouble I can get into. Need to put the green beans in the ground and hoop them.

I can't wait to see your Birchen babies! I am loving mine more and more everyday. The male just keeps getting more and more silver. Me loves the silver!

sounds like a great day there! The garden is still really really wet from all the crazy weather we've had over the last week or so. So, I'm inside working on poultry club stuff. Just trying to get a head start, so I don't end up having everything pile up at the last minute!

I'll try to get some birchen pics! The boys I think I'll end up culling all but two so far this round. the three blues are getting goldish coloring in on the wings now and so, buh bye boys! I have two splash birchens left from the first hatch. I love the way they are lookin so far. I'll see what I can do for pics when I take breaks from paperwork and if its not raining.

I'm glad to hear your boy is staying silver! I swear, nothing more depressing than a beautiful looking birchen boy and then all of a sudden....gold comes in....grrrrrr!
