Yes, my hens are too dark, so I hope to get some nice pullets once the hordes of chicks I am raising are old enough to tell. I am getting quite a few mossy ones too, though. I wish there was a color chart for the feather colors, like there is for egg color. I have a problem telling "brassy" from "copper" from "mahogany". Can someone post a pic of a Black Copper Marans cock with a "perfect" tail??

was looking at our group of Cuckoo Marans chicks and it looks like the girls are feathered in, while to boys are slower to feather in. Also looks like there are more boys than girls......this is just from looking at feather patterning, I am not seeing any comb or wattle difference at this point- they are 4 weeks old now.

So Just got back from a trip to Greece. Found boiled eggs looking like this all over...... I was shocked at first....





But then I remembered it was orthodox easter and all easter eggs are died red! To represent the blood of Christ.
the red dye they were using on the brown eggs looked exactly like a marans egg, even the way the color can smudge like when the hen is laying.

I found many chickens in greek art of different ages... I know this is Marans but if you want to see I will post a few pictures!

ps found the best house sitter....... while I was gone.... she set marans eggs to hatch! I will have BCM chicks Monday -Wed this week.

really? it was very uncanny how like Marans eggs they looked. I will have to try the onion thing and see if I can replicated it. Here are some other chickens I saw in greece.

Keara ~ Sure hope you had a good time in Greece! Those eggs would've fooled me, they look almost as dark as I get here with Marans! For months, I kept having the same dream almost every night. I was sitting on a stone veranda, with a grape arbor overhead, drinking wine, and looking out at an olive orchard. I wasn't sure if it was Greece or Italy, but some day hope to envision that dream; it was very peaceful...and I'll know it when I see it! Great that you found such a good house sitter too! At this point if I were to leave, I would find a somewhat starved, and blithering idiot in a small corner of the house, babbling on about how the dog kept her there!

Yeah!!!! Candled the Showgirl and Silkie eggs tonight on day 11. Out of 11 SG eggs, it looks like 5 are developing just fine, and all 10? (I can't remember now) of my own Silkie eggs are good too! The Showgirl eggs were in transit for SIX days, so I am really amazed any of them made it! I am so excited to see these little buggers arrive!!

awesome lady! My hatcher is packed with fuzzies! I'll take them out in the morning to make sure that they have time to dry out and see if any stragglers want to join in. From what I can see I have some big beauties

Well I have had one hell of a week.

The high lights...
I got a bad chest cold.
My 6 year old son got an ear infection and his ear drum burst.
My debit card info was stolen online and my account had to be closed.
My order of Andalusian chicks all died in the mail because the box was miss-sent.
And on top of all that a dose of PMS... Lol

But Saturday afternoon/ evening after work sitting outside in front of the chicken pens with a glass of wine...I feel strangely at peace.
Just glad the week is over.
