Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Very true. Funny, how when I was realllllly wanting one good Splash roo, he never appeared, but a pullet did! Next time you try hatching, set about 100 eggs and let us know if the odds get better.

Oh, that makes my brain hurt just typing that!
Let me know what you are looking for and where you are located. Hubby is headed to Springfield,MO and I have a few extra splash roos. I was going to have to figure out who to keep and who to sell this week anyhow. I am only keeping 2 I think so the rest all need homes lol.

well ya wont miss this! I just paid my invoice for some silver marans chicks to head my way soon!

Sweet maybe if I get any of mine to hatch we can raise ours together. I am thinking I should have ordered chicks instead of eggs now. One of the silvers started smelling bad the day before last so I took it out. 4 either never developed or were infertile 1 looks like a quitter, I was having a hard time seeing through some of them and I finally got a better light grrrr.
So only 6 are going into lockdown and one of those looks iffy, so probably really only 5. Soooo all I need is a pair or better yet a trio so will keep my fingers crossed.

I think 9 of the regular cuckoo marans are going into lockdown so will probably get more of those. I also got two blue EE eggs as freebee's with my cuckoo eggs and those both look good.

I threw these 2 orpington cross eggs in with my lavender and paint silkies that were left over from the broody who hatched the silver sussex, I wasn't sure on the age because these crazy orp girls would get into the nest box with the broody and lay their eggs in there. I could see that there were still active chicks in the eggs even though the broody had taken off with her other chicks and left them to get cold half the day. So one of these orp eggs just pipped this afternoon LOL! Ohhh the chicken drama!! Every day it is something else crazy going on here.

this maybe a stupid question. is it possible that chicken eggs are like alligator or lizard or snake eggs . the sex of the offspring depends upon the temperature the eggs are kept at. for
instance if the eggs are kept between say 80 - 85 degrees you end up with more females, if eggs are kept from 85 -90 degrees you get more males. I'm not exactly sure how this works but know it does as I use to raise reptiles. just a thought from a newbie.

Nope the temp does not affect the sex of the chicken egg. I did hear a whisper once about temp affecting which embryo survived and hatched. But in that case the embryo was not changing sex just one sex not hatching while the other one did better. Again...just heard a whisper about that and not even really sure of the details. lol

Not a stupid question! I have heard that question asked before.

the answer is no. However, there is a theory that too high temperatures will kill one or the other. So if too high of a temperature kills the pullets, then the pullets die and you hatch mostly roosters.

Even if this is true, it would seem cruel. Also, incubating at the wrong temperature on purpose could kill all of them or cause deformities and etc.

Hi Cad! Speedy recovery to you my friend!

Oh and yes the Olive eggs are sooooooo worth the wait aren't they? Yesterday I had to restrain myself from putting another dozen of them in the 'bator.
I soooo want to turn that silly thing off for a while. I'm kinda tired of rearing chicks......and just as I say that my project Blue Laced Barnie pullet threatens to start laying as she is now stratching around in the nest boxes!!!!!!

Do the oliver egger EEs have straight combs? How easy are they to sex and how old before you can reliably sex them (unless you are an expert vent sexer). I am raising some EEs that are Ameraucana X Orloff and I have to wait forever to figure out sex. Still waiting on a lot of them LOL. They are beautiful birds, though. I just have one splash and one black Ameraucana, moved them into my mixed layer flock with no male for now. Maybe would like to hatch some oliver eggers in the fall. Right now I'm a bit burnt out on hatching and too many chicks--incubators all going off in another week after the last of the turkeys come out. I've been hatching since last fall---and it is getting beastly hot here---need a break.

yeah, that's what I was afraid would happen to me if I tried the hatching eggs. That I'd end up with nothing notable hatching and then would feel compelled to try again...and by that time would have spent over 100 bucks including shipping and might end up with barely a handful of chicks, so I'd rather just go ahead and bite the bullet and buy chicks. Plus with a live chick guarantee, and the arrangement we have worked out to get me more than the 10 listed available, I couldn't pass it up! The chicks will hatch there May 28th and be to me not long after that!

Thanks for the offer! I'm up to my ears again in roos between the Marans and Silkies, one more would do me in!

I can't believe it! I have a paint silkie egg that just pipped. Its only day 19. They are supposed to hatch on Thursday. I triple checked my bator temp and it isn't running high.

He is in a hurry...must be a little roo.

don't be too alarmed, I regularly have bantam eggs that will start pipping early. It seems such a shock compared to the marans. Although, around here, my Marans hatches usually are started on day 20 and over by the end of day 21 most of the time.
