Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hey Vicki, those Birchens gals are looking good!! Such a deal, too.

I did too much work around here yesterday, and am dearly paying for it today. My lower back is wrenched, and I have all I can do to stand up semi-straight. OY! But, I did get a lot done yesterday. Cleaned the coops, raked the runs, took all the old litter to the garden, spread it around, dug trenches for potatoes (hope I'm not too late for planting them??), watered the garden (where's all this supposed rain??), went to town, came home and fed chickens, dogs, cats (or yeh, found the 2 babies PLUS 3 more!), cleaned the brooders and fed the little guys, and I was spent! Now, I won't be worth two dead flies for the next couple of days, but it was worth it!

thanks Debbi! I really love them and are such a joy to watch. I'm especially loving their size and body type in comparison to the black coppers. I think I have something to work with if the egg color ends up being good!

Sounds like you've been crazy busy! I say rest for a couple of days sounds well deserved! Today is my day off, so I went down to the local exotic sale and I DIDN'T bring anything home! I just like keeping track of what the market is like and what others are raising and checking out my competition haha

Hmmm, no Giraffes in your trunk??

If I ever won the lottery, I would have a herd of Rothchild Giraffes! I just think they are the neatest looking animal! I sure hope your egg color is good, but that is always something you can work on. If they have the conformation, type, and coloring, that's the first step. Egg color improvement seems to me to be an ongoing thing.

Solidered up, took some aspirin, and went back out to the garden. I think I pretty much got all those noxious weeds, I dug them out! If I see the slightest leaf pop up, I am digging!! Squash is up, cukes are up, flower on one pepper plant, and the tomato plants look good. Pulled some weeds around the yard, trimmed and lopped some branches, and then took the older Silkie chicks outside to play. Then went onto feed and water everyone, and now, I'm spent again. My back feels better though...until later.

Tomorrow, I am going out with some type of marker, and start marking all the culls here in both breeds. Too many darned chickens again for poor little me! I think I'll call little Emanuel, and see if he wants to butcher some chickens for me!

Some updated pics of my girls. I can't wait for eggs now! Maybe in 3 months.......

Aww, nice pics! I just love the Splashes. If mine weren't so darned pretty, she would be outta here! She is the most aggravating and stupidest bird I think I have ever had!! Someone chastised me for naming her "Dopey". I think I was being generous, I can think of a few other names I could call her! I sure hope yours are smarter than mine!

Awesome idea! That's what I'm doing this year...every couple of weeks I'm going to be sorting through birds and thinning down again. I think I've worked with the line of birds enough to know pretty well when I see something I can't live with.
I agree with you that the egg color can be worked on with the birchens if needed. I was thinking that just with rough estimation, that I'm probably about 1 1/2 to 2 months or so away from getting my first egg from these ladies!! That's not long!

OH and Debbi, I have 3 Ameraucana chicks out, 29 eggs to go....Day 21 starts tomorrow morning, so its going well!
Do you do anything different with them than the Marans? or is everything basically the same? I have not yet had great hatches with Ameraucana eggs.... EE yes, but not the real things. Even from other peoples eggs. Thinking of using broodies with them.

Holy cow! I didn't realize they were that far along! C'mon puffy cheeks!

haha...yup. It snuck up on me too! If Katelyn hadn't said something I probably would have forgotten to switch them over! I know one is blue, but the other two are still too wet to tell yet. Can't wait to take them out and play with them!!

I'm doing the same thing with the settings as with the Marans. So far they are popping like popcorn. My uncle has had problems off and on as well. His humidity was running too high I think and was causing complications. He's hatching right now too and so far with the new settings, he has a whole incubator full since he is almost a whole day ahead of my hatch
