Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I am moving everyone around and trying to put only pullets in the next grow out pen. I think these are suspects so any opinion on pullet or roo on these and if you see something that I have missed that they should be culled. On the other hand all the roos are going UNLESS you see something that says KEEP HIM.... I have 3 good roos right now and didn't really want to grow any out.

These two have some nice color on their neck and are throwing me. The first one is more copper the next one is lighter color.... more like what I have seen on pullets with color on their neck.






This is another.... I am pretty sure this is a roo. OPINIONS? He is older than the other by a few weeks.
The comb is not HUGE.

Now... this is my Cuckoo, the only one I kept from the Eggs from Newnan (she is the little one under everyone in the pic above)
She came from golden cuckoo, but they were very dark for cuckoos and she has great feathered legs.... use her or not?

hey Donna, I'm leaning towards pullet on the first one...if you could get a couple more shots of her body and etc if she will behave, that might help me make up my mind. The second and third are definitely roos. On the cuckoo...to be honest, I'm on the fence a little bit about it.

I will try to get some pics of the first two tomorrow.

I am too... she has the gold leakage, but feathered legs and hopefully good egg color....

that third is definitely a roo...I went back and edited because not all the photos had loaded yet, but you must have beaten me to posting. heehee
I don't know what to tell you on the cuckoo. It all depends on what you are wanting. I don't keep anything that shows leakage because I just wanted the silvers, but if you like the golds and such, I'd see what you end up with.

Ok this thread is really dangerous for me...
I want that birchen cockerel.. now I want goats... that is the cutest thing I have ever seen!! What do you do with goats besides have them? All I need is one more excuse for goats then I am getting them.

Here is an updated pic of one of my S/s+ cockerel. I swear once you said Birchen he started busting out his silver hackle feathers! Can't wait to start breeding!

As far as goats, it depends on what you are wanting them for. With the pygmies they are the meat version of the mini goats and the nigerians are the dairy version. I raise the pygmies a lot because I love them and sell most of the offspring to people...most of the time either backyard herd folks or 4Hers. They make fantastic weed eaters and this might sound bad, but they make fantastic jerky. Yes, I said it.

You gotta find someone that is good with making jerky tho

So goats... for meat? hmm... I think I ate goat before. I was about 9 years old, I remember it being good but now I will have the whole mental image of a cute goat. I have had goat milk too as a kid and remember not liking it. But I do like feta cheese. lol.. oh brother... listen to me. In the real world I own a salon. My clients think I have been abducted by aliens and replaced by a farm girl.

I will try to get some more pics of my girls in the next couple days. I caught them up today and examined them very closely and cannot see any copper feathers at all on two of them. But possibly it is too soon. I have one "blue copper project bird" that has just a couple copper feathers. Two blues that are showing no copper. But I could not really see silver either so I guess time will tell.

Goat meat is good, so is milk, the catch with goat milk is to never run your buck within 50 yards or so of milk does, it changes the taste of the milk, the other thing is to never use the night milk for human use, I use it for the other animals. And also, what the goat's milk tastes like is dependent on what food you have on them. They love the weeds and etc and therefore it affects the flavor of the milk. By controlling the type of forage the have, you change the flavor. Simple!

Look forward to seeing what you have to work with over there...and I'm with you...I hope I can get that boy!
