Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I got a question for you guys( I figured out that I can ask this since all of you get sidetracked anyway

) How many of you use your Marans and chickens as a stress relief? I mean they cause stress sometimes but for me its a different stressor. I used to have tons of hobbies. Fishing, hunting, art and music etc. Then all of a sudden I just lost interest in all of it. Wife told me I needed to find another hobby. Never grew up around chickens. I got some even though she wasnt keen on the idea. Love it! It relaxes me. Specialy now that Im bout above my head with my 15 yr old Son!

Absolutely!!! When I had my coop built, I also had the builders build me a deck off the back of my house so I could sit and watch the chickens! A few beers or glasses of wine, and chicken watching IS my stress relief! I even have a chair in the chicken run so I can sit in there with them sometimes just to observe them up close and personal. Good luck with the teenager, I raised two by myself, one girl, one boy. Thank your lucky stars your's is a boy!!

Here is a good link for all who are interested in chicken color genetics! Ha! I found the link on the Silkie thread, and, it's in Italian. But, I did not let the whole thing load due to my slow dial-up connection, so there may be a link somewhere on there to translate into English. I always wanted to learn Italian anyway, sooooo? Lots of pics and KippenJungle shots too of different combos. Enjoy!

I don't post here often, but I must chime in. When we bought this little farm, I was a three pack a day smoker. After I got chickens, I quit. I would go sit out with the chickens when I got stressed and reeeaaalllllyyy wanted a cig, and have a few jump up in my lap for petting, and the need for a cig would pass. I started with 100 hatchery Buff Orpingtons. Hadn't had chickens since I was a kid. I never want to give up my chickens again.

My youngest was 16 when we moved here. And his dad was deployed to Afghanistan shortly after. And I still quit smoking. Chickens. The best stress-relief out there. If they could bottle it....

I totally agree. One of my dear friends stopped by the other week because my daughter had called her and said she couldn't get ahold of me and was worried. So she sent my friend down to check on me, bless their hearts. I had been outside all day in the garden and with my chickens, cleaning coops and runs, and just tinkering around. I had just gotten done when my friend arrived. We called my daughter to assure her I was fine, just busy outside, then we had a peaceful few hours just watching the chickens and conversing. She says, "this is so nice, so peaceful, so calming. No wonder you enjoy them so much." Yup.

I'm using Internet Explorer browser, and when I click on Debbi's link there is a small gray bar just above the page title that says "Google, this page is in Italian, translate using Google toolbar?" and then off to the right is a button that says "Translate". If you click on the button it should immediately do all the translating work for you.
