Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

They are pine shaving and I've had four other chicks on them for almost 3 weeks. I've tried raising the temp and they get as far away from the heat source as they can. The 85 seems to be where they're the most comfortable, as they hang out in the middle of the brooder where I check temps. Do you ever have chicks that try and sleep standing up?

Yes, all of mine try sleeping standing up at some point, but gravity usually lays them down eventually. What about at night time when the temps drop? I know mine will all start peeping their heads off if the temp gets to 90 or lower for the first week of life. I put the light in a corner so they can go to it if they need the extra warmth, or so they can walk away from it in the daytime when the air warms up. Are you giving them any vitamins/electrolytes in their water??

Hmm, I wish I could be of more help to you. Are they all eating and drinking? Surely, someone else will come along and have some more suggestions. I still think you should up the temp a bit, they may be getting chilled at night.

OK Vicki I got some more pics of the SUSPECT Marans.... pardon the messy brooder, they are moving soon and I will clean it for the next batch

The one you thought is a pullet is in the front, the one you thought might be a roo is in the back

Same positions, the one in the back is profile

The pullet one is in the back and the roo one is in the front

Same, pullet in back and roo in the front

The only thing making me thing the one is a roo is the ratty tail. But I just can't tell.....

The other 2 are probably roos... they have pea combs and it has three rows.

My chicks always doze off while standing up. Seems like normal chick behavior. Chicks dying of course is not normal... Do they cheep a lot like they are uncomfortable?
I love it when they do that. Reminds me of feeding my children as babies, and they would fall asleep mid bite, and teeter back and forth, then take a nose dive into the food bowl!

yeah...I still say that big one you labeled what I thought was pullet and cockerel are what I'm gonna stick with from what I'm seeing. Looks to be a really nice pullet at that! can't wait to see in about a month what the development is!
