Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Quote: I did that with a pullet and killed her... I should have left her alone.... The food/stuff will get stuck and then they can't breath or they will inhale it and die.

To throw up on their own might work, too. I picke up a rooster this morning and he spit up on me. With throwing up, aLways a risk of aspiration.
So far so good. THe chicks that had hard crops are now soft and pliable.

I segregated all in trouble to better see progress and feed. Pulled a BO chick from the second brooder; the SS that was having problems was not identifiable. THe 2 OE that had crashed are running full tilt just like the others now. I think I should mark them more permanently.

Colt smashed his left eye Sunday. Despite my treatments, I needed the vet to look at him today. WHen it rains , it pours.

Me too! As I have gotten older, carbonated drinks do not agree with me, so if Pepsi is my option.... sweet tea is my pick! If I am going to have the carbonation I want a COKE.

Sorry about the Colt.

Sorry about your colt, Arielle!
Hope the vet says its nothing to worry about!!

My big mare had her filly on Tuesday morning and mare was having some trouble with a retained placenta.
She was pretty sick Tues and Wednesday (103.5 temp

) but, with some vet intervention and a bunch of meds, she's, hopefully on the upswing now!!

Love that the vets have useful drugs. Tranquilizers and a block to fully examine the eye. A very puffy upper eyelid; no broken eye socket; corneal has no ulcers. Just hurts so much.

Chickens are way cheaper than horses. Turns out the vet has silkies!!!

Yes this is what a Black Copper Marans roo will look like as he is growing out. He will still change quite a bit over the next few months and by change I mean that he will/should get more copper around the head/neck, shoulders and saddle area.
Mossy is a term that is used to describe brown stippling on the black feathers of the body (usually on the back and wing areas, but can be all over the bird). Mossy sometimes covers up to black as birds are maturing....but if it remains after maturity and a person is looking at breeding Marans, I personally would not use a mossy bird.
The purple and green sheen that you see are not actually a color of the feathers, it is how the feather reflects light. Yes it can be on the Marans. I think it is just beautiful to see them all shining and glistening in the sun.

thanks lady. I appreciate it.

You know that blue copper boy I showed you the other day? I can't believe how much he's grown in the last week! No white on his body, just one white toe feather! I just realized he'd never had the typical white. I'm really hoping that he keeps from getting any.
I still have to get pics of my younger chicks. I just haven't had much in the way of spare time the last few days. I'm hoping to be able to start building soon tho. Its rained too much the last two days to do much

Morning all

Thanks, Pink! Baby and momma look great today!

Vicki - still thinking of your family - glad to hear your dad will be in rehab for a while.
He can gain some skills and should go home with a plan to help out you and your mother.

Quote: Oh, Thank you so much!! This roo IS changing very quickly, every day he looks just a little different!! I agree it is very beautiful. I was wanting a pair of peas, but DH is just not into it, as I have suffered severe chicken math, and have no more room- but, I have sort of gotten over that with this roo developing all the beautiful irridescence in his feathers.. I could look at him all day!!
Thanks much for the reply- I re-posted because I think my questions got lost in my original post
