Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

3riverschick~

I have often thought of the potato method and everytime I bring it up or think about something is mentioned or commented on that it is really not the best way to go. Do you use this method? What are your thoughts on it and how do you like it compared to other methods you have used?

Lotsa~ Whats the bloody mess like when the spur comes off when using the plier method and how soon do they heal?
That's what I was wondering? Is there a raw quick just hanging out then? That's gotta hurt, or at least I would think so?

mornin' all! Its lookin like another cooker out today. Yesterday the heat index was 105, not sure what it will be today... So, perhaps I won't be taking birds to the sale like I thought I might. I am however gonna shoot for some pictures of my middle hatch if they will cooperate with me. I think its about 75% cockerels that I held back (18 chicks total), but that's the main priority this year, to get some nice ones, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
Here too Vicki! It's already thick with humidity. No rain in sight until Friday, and I can just imagine the storms this weather is going to produce...

For sure. We're in the 90s this week here in Michigan. And humid...but we have a nice breeze. I feel badly for the critters.

yeah...me too. Its hard not to worry about them, especially when at work or etc. I find myself obsessively replenishing water when I am home. Tried misters, but the dang chickens were so scared they spent all their energy screeching and flapping around that I figured they weren't gonna do me any good here.

The measurements for this light box are as follows. 48" wide X 36" High X 36 " deep. Made with 2x2 with 1/2" plywood all the panels are screw together for quick take apart if need be. I have this one set up in my wood working room. Any questions just let me know.
Hiya, Don! Glad to see you!! You had mentioned at one point posting a picture of the light box you built - did you ever do so and, if so, would you please direct me to that post so I can see it? Thanks!

Yeah, I tried a mister one summer here too, they avoided it like the plague! My Marans do NOT like to get wet. If they are out ranging around and it starts, the next thing I know, they are all lined up under the roof on my front porch! Big sissies! I think that is what endears me to this breed, they remind me of my Dobermans. When it would rain, they would refuse to go outside to do their business. So I got crafty one morning, opened the back door and yelled, "here kitty, kitty!" All 6 of them went tearing out the door!!

Slammed it shut, and they all sat under the porch roof on the back porch whining like babies.
