Quote: I was just looking for a starting point--a master breeder award should not be taken lightly. I do know from word of mouth of many flocks, espeically univerisity flocks, where they never get shown yet have a remarkable flock; I'm not wsaying every university , I'm repeating someone else observation of the quality of that flcok and years of devoition to production high genetic quality that will never be formally recognized. As newbie, I don't have the knowledge to judge, however earning the master breeder award tells me that person is extremely knowledgable about that particular bird.

Horses--yes, 3 years to get to breeding age!! I picked a breed that provided data collected on the stallions based on testing , performance and also his children. OVer the years it adds up.

As for the Master Breeders, as per the Silkie Breeder's Directory that lists the new ones, here is what it says.

"MASTER BREEDERS": when an exhibitor receives 100 Master Breeder points in any variety, over a period of not less than 5 years, he or she will be awarded Master Breeder Status.

"MASTER EXHIBATORS" : When an exhibator hits 10,000 Master Exhibator points, over a period of not less than 5 years, he or she will be awarded Master Exhibitor status.

So while this is not a direct quote from the APA/ABA, it will give you an idea of time line and points needed to assume either title. The APA has a more detailed description of these awards. At any rate, it takes at least 5 years and lots of wins to accomplish these. That said, there are many that do not show at all, and their birds could rival any seen in the shows! But as far as looking for serious breeders right out of the box, I would start with these titles from the APA/ABA! At least you know these folks are in it for the long run, and not looking to make a quick buck!

I know I challenge everyone's thinking--but I love that we tear it all apart and find the value in it!!

Certainly Not, you have to show and win best of breed or reserve of breed with a certain number in breed to get points. I will drig out the yearbook with all this info. Post any of your Marans and I will give you a complete critique and complete explaination.
I'll attest to the amount of work it takes to get to that point. Doing show secretary work I've helped quite a few people over the years with getting their paperwork sorted for the show results on their birds and get to talking to them and some of them keep incredibly rigorous schedules for shows to be able to make their goal.

As of Monday, I will be cuckoo-less.... except for a few chicks. I did find 2 feathered legged pullets today, I didn't see any gold. I may grow them out and see what they look like.... till something crops up. ...... MAYBE..... I don't really need an excuse, just an empty pen.

SORRY GUYS! I didn't get to get pics of the gypsy girls. I could see how you could use it. I had Marans in my first batch that were GHOSTLY pale.... I didn't like that either.
how ya feelin about not having the cuckoos anymore? Think you'll get some more or?
